Taylor Swift The Tortured Poets Department

It’s been a while, hasn’t it? I have missed you guys, but I hope you will forgive me when I tell you why I have been gone for so long… I have been listening to The Tortured Poets Department on repeat, and I got quite lost in it. Now, as a Swiftie, I can’t get over the 31 songs, but I’m not going to go through each and every one of them – I am going to do 13.

  1. Fortnight

We all have that dream, we all have that what could have been but what will never be. A tragedy that stains some vital part of our life span, a black spot on the stories of our life that leave us fractured like a windstorm. Its dramatic, its dark, it is accompanied by a beguiling black and white (for the most part) video.

It features Post Malone who, admittedly I did not beleive would be a well serving duo but after listening to the track a few times I was happy for his company, his harmonies complimenting Taylor’s effortlessly. You can sing to it, sob to it, dance to it. Taylor Swift remains on top.

We have all had that one love that has ruined our life be it a lover, a friend, a habit, identify the culprit and run. Also her Grammys 2024 advert makes so much more sense after watching this video and I gotta say I like this new asthetic although I miss midnight’s vibe, I’ll get over it.

Although melencholia permeates through the synth and the melody toward the conclusion of this song there is so much hope, there is optimism that the sun will return. It is the light we have learned to love, it is the light we have learned to live for but without the dark we wouldn’t see its benefits.

2. The Tortured Poets Department

I heard this and immediatley thought of those pretenious people that slide into your lives only to build up their own ego. They frequently quite Charles Bukowsi and exclusivley drink espresso, they writer poetry in their tartan pyjamas until the early hours of the morning, either on a typewriter or with quill and ink. They drink only a specific type of ale and beleive they bring the light to any room they stand in. I have met a few, perhaps have even been this person to some, although I hope not.

I like the rhyming pattern in this song but do I like this song? I do not know. Does it inspire me? No. Did I google Dylan Thomas and Patti Smith? Yes. The lyrics “You smoked then ate 7 bars of chocolate” are just ridiculous especially when followed with ‘like a tatooed golden retriever’ I get the imagery, I get the energy, it just didnt live up to my idea of Swift’s usual standards. But this is one song out of 31 that I am unsure on.

3. Down Bad

As someone who has cried at the gym, its from the cardio I swear…, I love this song. The sound at the start, whatever is the source of such n intoxicating tune, it is so beautiful, it really rinses my brain, I hear it and I breathe better. I think the pain we learn from our first heartbreak never goes away, that pain is part of us and we polish it.

Even in your 30s,40s, 50s, that anger is evocative of end of the world fights when you were 16 having your heart crushed for the very first time, you are full of rage and upset and there is no where to channel it, all this love that has been lost comes out as a black hole in your bedroom, something you collapse in, something you pull the rest of the world into and there is no escape.

This song is on my gym playlist, don’t blame me if you see me singing to myself when I am supposed to be sprinting when this comes on. The vulnerability, the isolation that comes with heartbreak even though it is a universal feeling, your love the one specifally for you was meant to be different, it was mean’t to last.

It is quite clear that I love this song.

4. So,Long, London.

Listening to this with headphones on is otherwordly. The pacing, the power, the harmonies. ‘How much sad do you think I had in me?’ How much pain can one person make you feel, how much do you have in you? Throughout the honest, the vulnerbaility, Swift is a storm, she is sad, enranged but she remains hopeful, a force of resilience she continues. ‘You said that you loved me but where was the proof?’

Words are just words even when you sing them softly! You have just moved someone’s air and warmed it into music for thier mind, where is the action, where are the flowrs, the notes, the planned dates, the suprises, where is the passion?

This track 5 song is allegedly an ode to Swift’s ex who she split with after 6 years. 6 years, 6 months , 6 weeks all a lifetime when you are in love. Heartbreak is a state of mourning, you are yearning for what you once had, but also what could have been and what will now never be.

5. Florida

I instantly loved this track, Taylor’s energy, the impact of Florence +The Machine, the chorus! Sometimes we like comfort, but then there comes the consequence of the comfort and that is when we fight for freedom, or take flight to escapism. Florida is all about reinvention, that stage in your heartbreak where you recreate who you were, you rid yourself of who they once loved and try on new shoes, squeeze into them and tell yourself they fit as you struggle to dance the night away. Going to Florida is perhaps the popstar equivalent to getting a new haircut and handbag after a bad breakup.

The end is an opportunity, live a new life, see the world with different eyes and forget all the lies of the loves that came before. Florida ,for me, is about trying again, again on that note of recreation and resilience. I love the line ‘Me and my ghost we had a hell of a time‘, this is a song for the road, for the summer, rooftop down, windows open, belting out Florida as you drive through your quiet village pretending you are anywhere else.

6. Guilty As Sin?

With an opening evocative of a very slow, sedated blur song 2 riff, this song is all about wanting someone you shouldn’t, or should you? Who is to tell you who you can and can’t love (as long as it is consentual) your friends may try to protect you from further damage by pleading with you to get rid but if you beleive it is love, then for you it mus the love.

This song is abotu a fantasy, you have not acted on what you desire but the desire is there, oh it is there and when you see them are you guilty jsut for looking? Do your eyes give it away, do they see the ghost of themselves in your expression?

The power, the energy, the riff almost a call back to her country days with its slight twang. It is upbeat, it is thought-provoking, it is relatable. ‘Am I allowed to cry?’ Over someone who isn’t and or ever has been yours? Of course you are as it is unlikely the ever will be.

7. Who is afraid of little old me?

If you have ever been underestimated, overlooked, interupted, this song is your collective rage. It is empowering, it is engraging and it is just damn good. Swift’s life was under a microscope early in to her teens, she grew up being watched, these years of eyes, public spies, a strangers foot steps in her lifehave tkaen their toll on her well being and this song takes that power away from them.

I imagine the life of a celebrity to resemble that of a zoo animal, the tiger must always be magnificent and fierce, it must always perfrom and roar for us but its temper msut always be controlled. Here the tiger is unleashed and we put our cameras down and run for the hills. Yes she is a celebrity but she is a creator, she had given us this beautiful art and we are tear it apart, laughing at her broken heart.

8.Clara Bow

A legacy of talented women and the mirrors they hand down to us. We are never us in our own right we must always be justified, oh yes you come next in this single line of success for women, you are sensational, an ‘it’ girl, a younger version of… Clara bow was the first so called ‘it’ girl, paving the way for so many lookalikes. Why can a woman not just be herself and be applauded for it, comparison is a cage we need to break free from.

Clara Bow applauds these women with Swift name dropping Stevie Nicks and herself. It is an empowering song that offers a refrehsing insight on the industry as well as reminding us of these talented women who were never allowed to be talented in thier own right, there was always some other reason.

With this song Swift re-ignites that spotlight, openig up her stage to all the women that have come before, dring and after her. It is not one singers stage it is everyones.

9.The Black Dog

The delcious duality fo this song, the metaphor and meaning behind the Black dog but with it being a traditional english pub name this song has so many corridors. Lamenting the ong summers of love, wondering how could you ever not be enoguh when they had once healed you with their touch?

We are all replacable, even by those who are meant to polish our picture we could easily become a msitake shattered on the mantlepiece. You will forget me, I will forget you but it was love wasn’t it? At one point it was love and my god was it good? Was it good?

10.thanK you aIMee

Rising from the rubble of someone elses wreckage, your house is on fire but you didnt light the match. The world is burning and there are flames on your face, but you dondt light the match. Some wounds dont heal and that is ebcause they are not supposed to, we absorb them, we become part pain, part polish, we learn to live as a recovering patient, always, our smile stronger than any medication.Sometimes we have to watch part of us burn in order to breathe clearly again.

There is much speculation as to who this song is about and I would ahve to say I agree. Sucess is the best revenge and Swift certanly serves this. This song beuatifully reclaims Swift’s standing, wiping off the dust of an ongoing feud. She matuallry addresses the pain and demonstrates how she learned to grow from it. The reference to Sisyphus, I am in love with this album.

Again the actual tune to this track seems to have a country twang to it, definitly a banjo esque backing track going on.. debut fans are you listening?

11. I hate it here

We are all pretenders, we are all poets, we are all here and always somehwere else at the same time, in my mind I am living every other life, visting those ‘secret gardens’. Fantasy lands, places where you are unknown, places where you are seen by that one individual who looks straight through you. We are always born in the wrong era, we always blame our parents.

This track isn’t one of my favourites but I do like certian lines and the chorus is very fun, one we can all relate too. What is your secret garden?

12. I look in people’s windows

I like the repetition of out out out, then south south, south. The melody is very evocative of So, long, London. I think this song is a nod to all of us living other peoples lives, wathcing everything perfectly unfold online, their shiny skincare deals, thier iced lattes, their contoured and carved stomachs and faces, thier prsitine floors and smiling faces, thier instagram age full of passport pages.

We never want to look into the windows of our own life this is about living a windowsil life, dipping your toe into someone else’s strides. It’s s horter song as thoufh swift is literally just glancing through the glass not wantng to linger, not wanting to bother just wanting to watch, wanting to escape, wanting to learn.

13. The albatross

An albatross is a metaphor for an inescapable moral or emotional burden, is this how she felt? Is htis how she felt when she ran round with her super glue, her plasters, her pleading? when she tried to stop the walls from peeling, when she tried to stop you from leaving?

By the end of the song she is using those wings to fly above, to protect you, she becomes a parachute again that theme of resiilience permeates and there is always solace after sadness, there is always peace after a storm.

Similairly to the Black Dog and the Bolter the Albatross references England’s pubs and bars and continues on with the double entendre. Rime of the Ancient Mariner by Samuel Taylor Coleridge is also a peom that references an albatross in which a sailor is cursed for shooting one down, sometimes we do not have to point out the beauty of the bird to someone else to prove its beauty, sometimes we can just appreicate it on our own and let it fly on.

Blue Ray by THWACK!

Nothing is meant to last, but that makes it all the more worthwhile.

Everything has a deadline, everything will come to an end. Despite the passion, despite the pain everything expires. But doesn’t that make it all the more meaningful? This isn’t forever, so enjoy it while it lasts.

Debut release, Blue Ray by THWACK! discusses the semantics of demise, connection, and passion. As a sultry, punk-esque orchestral track, it offers up a deeper connection to some darker themes but was predominantly inspired by the album covers ‘In the zone’ by Britney Spears and ‘Fallen’ by Evanescence and the unrequited love the two pieces of art seem to share.

The music is energetic, lively, and hauntingly good, boasting an ethereal edge fueled by empowered vocals and an emboldened drumbeat. As debuts go, this is definitely one that doesn’t need to demand attention, it will already have it after the first few beats. Celebrating imperfect connections and the passion of the taboo, Blue Ray conveys the thrill of knowing that this kind of passion isn’t forever, but it is for now.

The cover art for the Blue Ray is a captivating piece that appears to draw inspiration from René Magritte’s “The Lovers” and the film “Midsommar.” This melding of influences serves as a powerful reminder that appearances can be deceiving, and that there is often more beneath the surface than meets the eye. The use of visual elements reminiscent of these iconic works of art and cinema enhances the depth and intrigue of the cover art, inviting viewers to contemplate the hidden truths that lie within.

The first iteration of THWACK! occurred somewhere in the haze of lockdown when Charlie (Shey/They – Vocals, Guitar) became worried the world was gonna end and thought it would be awful for that to happen without at least attempting to start a band. A little digging and they discovered Chlo (She/Her – Bass, vocals) writing emo poetry at the base of the Marc Bolan Tribute statue.

Music history was formed in this meeting and formed again a little while later when Charlie (quite by accident) stumbled upon Mal (She Her – Cello, Vocals) in an anarchist wine tasting event in a disused theatre in Brixton. A few weeks later we had our first rehearsal with the addition of Blake (They/Them – Drums) who was found through a queer spiderweb connecting via 1980’s Indiana, it became clear in that moment that punk bands really had been lacking a string section. We later found Frankie (They/Them – Electric Violin, Vocals) in the dark cabaret under lands of South London and thus THWACK! in all it’s glory was born.

With musical backgrounds from punk, drag, glam and emo the music produced boasts an eclectic edge , a smorgasboard of sound to choose from.They’ve been playing together for a while so despite the unique influences the signature sound of THWACK! is starting toshine through.

Describing their music as ‘ quite genre queer ,tight and unpredictable, the next Wet Leg and the Waluigi to The Last Dinner Party’s Mario” it will be exciting to see how this band evolves.

After a 3-year drought, Grande is back in our ears with a new sound, a new look, and a new sense of self. She sounds mature, more comfortable with where she is by spotlighting the sadness that she has been tormented by. With the album out last week, 8th March,we thought we would take the time to do a quick stop at each track.

There is strength in vulnerability. We can make ourselves weak as a consequence of our own actions or be made to feel small by external emotional earthquakes we have no hand in. Each comes with pain, shame, and sorrow but can become a new sheen to our shield, a new tip to our sword. Grande’s latest album ‘Eternal Sunshine’ showcases both this power and vulnerability, ushering in a new season for the singer… finally the light is here.

Track 1- intro (end of the world)

Self-aware and honest, this song instantly captures the entirety of the album with its dreamy feel, its layered harmonies, and ethereal edge. And after her hiatus, she is quick to get going, transporting us right into the next track.

Track 2- bye

Upbeat and life-affirming, this song sees the positive in letting go, finding closure, and moving on. You can feel the radiance shining through the rain clouds. You are dancing yourself out of a dark room and into the sunrise, making the streets outside golden. You have been patient, you have been placid, you have sacrificed your peace in an attempt to create positivity, but now it is time to take your power back and leave.

Track 3 -don’t wanna break up again

Astrologist Diana Garland delivers a beautifully poetic bite of science delivered in a philosophical basket. There will come a time in your life when it is right for you to turn around, take a look, and learn through reflection, appreciate where you are and where you have been, kiss your cuts and bruises for healing, and look into the future to see where you want to be.

Track 5-eternal sunshine

To heal, we must forget? Our memories, both golden and broken, are who we are, all the sadness, all the smiles, they are who we are. Pain and positivity make a person. I want to remember all the loves I have had, both good and bad, I am who I am because of all of them.

But this track spotlights that pain, putting them under the microscope to tear them apart is they don’t hurt anymore, giving the mic to the most painful of places. When we look back on our lives what do we look for, the light or the darkness?

She is her own sunshine, she has healed from the pain and when it rains she becomes her own light. Inspired by the 2004 film directed by Michael Gondry in which the two main progtaginsits ‘clementine’ (portrayed by Kate Winslet) and Joel (portrayed by Jim Carrey) choose to erase painful memories of thier relationship in order to move on without relaising that memoires are our life lessons, we should cherish each experience, understanding that despite the excrucation to erase an exeprience is to remove a crucial part of your identity.

Track 6- Supernatural

Love is magical, it’s a blooming bruise, it’s a bouquet filled with wilting roses, it’s a month of sunshine, it is eyes full of tears and a face full of smiles.

It has an ethereal edge to it, the emotional connection you can create with something, it feels almost otherworldly as though some larger energy forged a path for you to find each other. It is unstoppable, something you willingly succumb to you letting go of fear and falling in love, knowing your loved one will catch you.

It is a very sensual track with Ariana herself describing it as the ‘horniest’. There is definietley a visceral power to the song wiht palpable pleasure s demand for desire to be dlievered , touch is all that is needed, it is all feverish, it is all delicious, and overpowering; it is supernatural.

Track 7-True story

Spotlights exagerate the flaws of its victims, the critics see this success as a magnifier an opportunity to direct the light to the parts we try to hide, amplyyfing lose whispers and spooling them into delicous lies.

Grande reclaiming her narrative, throwing the spotlight on the critics; this is her playing the bad girl and the boy is mine is the bad girl’s anthem. It is Grande taking back her power. Her voice was taken away by the critics and now she’s using it to reclaim her story, refusing to be silenced; you can’t control what people say, but you can control how you react to it, and if you can laugh in the face of adversity, then you win.

Track 8-The boy is mine

A follow on from the aforemntioned track that boasts nostalgic 90s hip-hop and layered harmonies. A reimagination of the iconic 1998 track The Boy Is Mine by Brandy and Monica this song is empowering if not a bit of fun, a play by the singer to assume the narrative she has been given and run with it.

Described as a bad girl anthem by Grande it is about taking ownership of your love and despite what passers-by may perceive if this is love then it’s yours and that is okay.

The tabloids love a bad woman because it does not fit into our societally normalized idea that for a woman to be good she must be pure, selfless, and passive, which just isn’t the case. Remember her relationship with wicked co-star Ethan Slater is only rumored and it is also umored ithat if they are togetehr they got together when they were btoh single, and if they really are together, no matter the situation, who are we to involve ourselves in that narrative? Why do we feel we have a right to comment on someone else’s business? So ,to a similar tune, I introduce the next track-

Track 9-Yes, and?

Yes and is a nod to Grande’s acting routes being a rule of thumb ithat states you should accept what the improviser has said; this is exactly what Grande does. You think that about me, you do that about me; who cares if she has done the stuff you say? She is happy; it is about accepting others’ ideas and adding to them.

As the lead single it offers a more bouncy, raunchy vibewith a music video that honours a bouncy pop Paula Abdul’s cold-hearted music video. She is living her most authentic life whilst the rumour mill keeps churning out its lies, made indominatble by her happiness and authetncnity buttressed by her biting bridge;

Just because Grande grew up in the public eye does not mean she has no right to privacy; her relationships are not a performance for us, it is personal to her, and her partner is

Admittedly, yes and was not initially on my playlist but now it is a power anthem. Own it, own it, own it. Yes and?

Track 10-We can’t be friends

We have all had those relationships that come to an end in which both parties swear that someday they will be friends again, in some cases this may be true, perhaps they were right person just wrong time but sadly in most you are left to realize that this is just a sweetener to settle the separation.

Your dreams may try to convince you that on some parallel plane you are in fact still together, but after those brief moments of fuzz in the morning, you remember how far off this fantasy is.

Sometimes you have feelings for someone you can’t really be friends with anymore but that does not mean there isn’t still love for them. All of the memories, all of the fights, the love, the forgotten nights, and dizziness of the days in their arms; sometimes it’s nice to pretend that you could go back there.

Find a space where you can be yourself and if that space is big enough to share then be yourself with everyone else, but if they try to narrow that space and shut it out, then run before it swallows you whole. Ultimately this song is all about being patient, waiting for the right person to fall in love with, waiting until you have recovered from painful memories, when they feel like they belong to somebody else.

Track 11-I wish I hated you

Sometimes things end because they have to, not because you want them to. Dragged along by distance or knowing you both need a space is a sad but understandable end to a relationship. When things end softly and silently, between sobs and lingering hugs it can be difficult to let go.

You are left longing for hurt, wishing that one was a villain who was easy to hate but this is not always the case and although you know the love is gone it is always difficult to say goodbye to those held heart memories and the future you were going to make.

Track 12-Imperfect for you

To be loved is to be known, authentically and completely. I will show you all of the good, all of the bad, and everything in between, and I will hope you will love me unconditionally. There is so much pressure to be perfect, to live life on that narrow tightrope and navigate it expertly with a genuine smile on your face.

It is nice to know that if we do fall from that narrow margin there will be others at the bottom ready to hoist us up to a more realistic level, leaving room for both our strengths and weaknesses and seeing us for the person we are throughout it all. The song title also offers witty wordplay sounding very similar to ‘I am perfect for you,’ alluding to the fact we all have different expectations for perfection and whoever we are there is someone for us.

With its hopeful harmonies and self effacing edge it is clear to see why Grande herself as said this is one of her favoruites from the album.

Track 13-Ordinary things

This is by far my favourite track on the album

Diamond rings and shiny things mean nothing when your heart isn’t held by a loving hand, your head isn’t kissed by caring lips. Supermarket flowers and a handwritten note, a homemade cake and a shoulder to cry on, dancing to music in the kitchen, it is the little things we overlook that are the bedrock of a genuine relationship, love is so ordinary, it is so essential, why do we put it on such a pedestal, apply pressure to it and expect it to flourish, it is about coaching, about patience and appreciation.

To be with the person you love should feel like ‘seeing daylight,” as Grande’s Nonna, Marjorie Grande says.

But with daylight comes darkness, reflecting that she “could’ve packed up and left a million times, you know? It’s not that we never fought. Never go to bed without kissing goodnight. That’s the worst thing to do, don’t ever, ever do that. And if you can’t, and if you don’t feel comfortable doing it, you’re in the wrong place. Get out”

No matter how much time you have invested, no matter where you are in a relationship, if you are not happy, if you are not here, you need to leave. No matter how scary, no matter how brave a situation where you are not yourself is worse than anything else

Eternal Sunshine is a smorgsboard offering slices of the self, smiles and suffering, a true allegory for the human experience going from heartbreak to finding new love and living for it, with healed hurt and a huger heart. Overall the Arianators are applauding her comeback, ushering in her return with pride and elation at her new found happiness.

Chemtrails Over The Country Club boasts a surreal, swooning quality, a melody that washes mundanity in gold and makes it glimmer. We get so lost in major moments we forget about the minutiae of everyday, the beauty in suburbia, the simple joy of ‘late night TV, doing the laundry’. Released 4 years ago, Chemtrails is ever-relevant to the ‘Little life’ romanticism that allows poetry to permeate.

Of course, mundanity is not so monotonous if you can live it up lavishly. Wearing jewels in swimming pools may not be so accessible to us mere listeners, but Del Rey makes it so with her moving lyrics and magnetic vocals. She is transportative, stepping into her song and finding yourself lost in worlds you have always wished to enter. A forbidden fantasy, a sense of freedom, fields and frolicking, sports cars and speed. This song feels sunny and uplifting, inspiring and powerful, whilst also remaining quite mournful as if all these wishes were once yours and now they are just whimsical memories you can only envision when your head is in the clouds.

It explores the desperate and dreamy duality that comes from having no attachments; being nobody’s son, nobody’s daughter, you are as free as the wind, as light as water. You can move with no restrictions, no eyes watching you, no one to judge, but that’s it – no one is watching, no one to do laundry for but yourself, no one to wash your hair for but yourself. It is a testament to perseverance, a pursuit of passion despite being left to do it on your own – an ill-fated love affair. A love song dedicated to America, suburbia, and family with its signature Del Rey twist.

Described as an ‘aspirational’ track by the band of brothers New York Arizona and This, this song eloquently highlights the struggles of an independent band on tour. It encapsulates the journey of striving for recognition while facing the challenges of dealing with rip-off venues and rivals. Lead singer, Eugene, discussed the band’s inspiration for the track ,“driving from Edinburgh to London to play shows with no idea of what to expect. We were DIY and trying to push our touring as much as we could, only to be occasionally ripped off by venues and promoters, or playing to rooms of people that didn’t seem to give a damn about the music or the scene, to then make the long journey back home to Scotland”

The bittersweet revelation that it was sort of what you expected but it could have been better. The steady chorus calls out to all the dreamers as it embodies  yearning for more, such as touring the States, attaining worldwide recognition, and transcending the DIY scene to prove their worth to the sceptics

With January coming to a steady close we have had almost a month to reflect on the stories that have propped us up, been our mattress once we have fallen down, and given us the fighting words to stand up on our own again.Reinvention through reflection , forgiveness and healing are all semantics in Natasha Bedingfield’s 2004 track ‘Unwritten’ which reached no.6 during its initial release.

20 years later it’s back in the UKs top 20 in part due to Will Gluck’s Romcom starring Sydney Sweeny and Glen Powell. It is becoming the trend of new movies sharing a light on nougthies tracks, as seen with Sophie Ellis-Bextors- Murder on the Dancefloor featured in the final scene of Emerald Fennells disturbingly delicious ‘Saltburn’. Unwritten is not only poignant and insightful it is catchy and upbeat lending it a timeless nature that is still relevant today.

Used as the soundtrack to popular American TV series The Hills in 2006 Unwritten has seen frequent pop culture attention, I refrain from using the word reveal as it seems the song never lost is significance, with Bedingfield releasing a remix for a rerun of the show in 2019.

It’s R&B influences and its uptempo pop feel boast a nostalgic edge with a contemporary vibe, this song is the sound of summer, it is the sound of things to come, be them good or bad you can prepare and stay composed whatever happens it can be ‘unwritten’, you can always try again tomorrow. With will and positivity, empathy and education you can go forward, knowing you can change your circumstance or your mindset to it.

Originally associated with graduations due to its inspiring message for the future, reminding us that one day does not have to define the rest, Bedingfield wrote the song for her brother whilst on tour, considering everything she wished she had been told at his age.

We are only defined by the pen we hold and the words we write, propelled by the actions we take, the choices we make, the mistakes we learn from, the mistakes we make again. Our failiabilty, our optimism so innately human.Her lyrics and energy are empowering, reassuring and restorative, the audible equivieleint to the perfect tea and a kiss on the forehead before a deep, restful sleep.

Unwritten is full of hope, unity and independence, a mantra about taking each moment in our stride as we go through the rest of 2024.

The 2023 blockbuster Barbie revived Cinema, set TikTok Trends and soundtracked our 2023 . It had us singing, dancing and crying all in one sitting.

Personally ‘I’m Just Ken’ sits pride of place in my frequent plays on Spotify, it is also one of the few songs I can proudly play on piano and I completely understand and truly believe it is deserving of the award. However not everyone shares this view and after seeing his reaction to the award perhaps Gosling himself  is amongst those on TikTok that do not think it was worthy of the win. Adversity to the award choose to highlight h the cruel parallels  between the meaning of the Barbie and a song about a man complaining he is not the protagonist in a woman’s story, arguing that ‘I’m just Ken’ , a song produced by a man, sung by a man, wining this award is considerably quite ironic. Perhaps they have a point and that is fine, I just don’t agree.

Dance the night away’ by Dua Lipa and ‘What was I Made for?By Billie Ellish (Both from Barbie) were also nominated with many arguing that they should have won for the sole reason they were sung by a woman,  personally the gender of the writer behind a song should not factor whether it is a success, its success should be measured by its popularity, its relevance to the film and its resonance with the audience and although what was  I made for hits bulls eye, it was I’m just ken that had us bouncing, revving us up for a workday, creating kitchen dance routines and filming TikTok’s.

Fuel to this fire was poured earlier last week when host of Golden Globes Jo Koy made a pretty low-brow and rushed joke at the origin of the film comparing it to Oppenheimer which was ‘base doff a 721 paged Pulitzer prize winning book about the Manhattan project and Barbie is on a doll with big boobies” a childish and sexist reduction to what Gerwig’s creation actually depicts, its complexities too deep and expansive to cover in what is meant to be a music review… although Gerwig herself has offered a sympathetic response saying ‘well he’s not wrong she was the first doll mass produced with breasts’

‘I’m just ken’ allows Barbie’s ‘love’ interest a voice, giving him a narrative in a film that is supposed to be about female actualisation, empowerment and self discovery. It not only allows him power over his won story allowing him to just be ken rather than Barbie and Ken but also demonstrates how many men also struggle with their own identity, their own emotions rarely being taken seriously. it is his redemptive arc, allowing viewers to empathise with I’m, for that is the true definition of feminists, creating equality between men and women to better the situation, 

Produced by Mark Ronson and written by Andrew Wyatt ‘I’m Just Ken’ is a modern masterpiece, with 80s influences. On the surface a fun throw away song, an excuse for a comedic choreographed dance break and for Gosling to show-off his range. The whole weight of the song is in its own inability to take itself seriously, the duo paired with visuals becomes a distracting display of thoroughly refined dance moves taking away the attention from how ken is truly feeling, detached from reality, alone in his feelings and powerless in the face of an overshadowing figurehead for his own society, it is a truly feminist anthem.

Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s 2001 hit, “Murder on the Dancefloor,” has made a resounding comeback, thanks in part to Emerald Fennell’s 2023 gothic and glorious film, ‘Saltburn‘ .The film, featuring Barry Keoghan and Jacob Elordi, has propelled the colourful track back to the number 8 position, over two decades after it reached number 2 upon its initial release.

The groovy track, “Murder on the Dancefloor,” delves into the themes of tumult, jealousy and doing what you can to set the groove with similar semantics being discussed in ‘Saltburn’ it is fitting that this song would soundtrack its final scene. Depicting a disturbing dialogue about desire, deceit and the class divide ‘Saltburn’ has quickly become a cult classic with Gen Z and millennials coming together to show their love for both the film and the track in a slew of viral TikTok’s.

“Saltburn”-themed videos featuring the track have amassed an impressive 4 billion views on the app. The track also experienced a significant surge in streams on New Year’s Eve 2023, with 1.5 million streams in a single day. Furthermore, in the first week of January, “Murder on the Dancefloor” claimed the top trending spot on The Hot 100, marking its first appearance on the list.

Perhaps this musical miracle holds a motto we should carry into 2024: we may plant seeds in the day that will only grow at night- Bextor herself put it poetically in a Newsnight interview earlier this month “You have to be open to the unexpected, and you can’t plan what happens next”.

Dubinski are back with their latest track, Downtown Operation. After releasing their debut album ‘Dubinski’ in 2022 the brand of brothers have recently released another energetic track to add to their ever intriguing repetroire.

Downtown Operation, fast paced and free feeling, this song boasts an optimistic edge that makes you feel as though you are soaring away from everything, getting out without missing a breathe. Estatic, you escape adversity with a smile on your face. With its electronic feel, you imagine yourself plugging into something surreal, full of synthetic sounds and digital beats, this track feels futuristic whilst still being familiar but that is just the beauty of their instrumentals whilst the lyrics unveil something deeper, more sinister that would have you running but certainly not with a smile on your face.

Inspired by politicians who are blind to reality, this song offers a satirical edge, a refection of racial profiling, police brutality. It is a forewarning, the sound of despair, a lighthouse to the terrors of the world but no one is turning the torch on, too scared of what they may see.

We are all trying to get out of ‘this place’ but where are we trying to end up? All the weekends we live for end up the same, stumbling out of the same local and into a different bed, waking up with a banging head being sick at the things you said.

Dubinksi are colour engine of sound and eccentricity, a fusion of creativity and the bizarre. The shape of their sound is massive as they pull us up and over ourselves.

The album focus track ‘Gotta Get Outta This Place’ is rooted in their hard-working studio dynamic, with their producers Mike and Robbie pushing Eugene to record his vocals more than 20 times before the
perfect take emerged.

Our family figurines, just people in positions, we have placed them in to protect us from reality. The lives we lost because of something we found out, everything you’re doing all for someone else. People change because they have to, changed minds and changed lives we can live in our memories but we will not survive. There are the miracles of life and the joys of Christmas and summer but there is also the ‘season of the sticks’ a miserable time of year where life drags out the dirt you have tried to bury.

This song is evocative of campfire nights, of some distant life I am yet to have experienced but I am only really inspired by it’s chorus. There is talent and there is poetry but it feels lost to the rushed tempo, a racing mind too scared to settle on the thoughts that make it run, so it is clever in that sense but it feels undone, taking away the motional impact that a broken heart has, there is no time to settle with the pain, there is just the feeling of running away.

However, I am impressed and amused by the rhyming of sticks with exist and the verse:

‘ So I thought that if I piled something good on all my bad
That I could cancel out the darkness I inherited from dad
No and I’m no longer funny but I miss the way you laugh’

Covered by Olivia Rodrigo on BBC Radio One’s Live Lounge this song has truly got people talking, crying into the cuffs of their sleeves, singing along on drives through the country back to see old friends and family. There is so much pain in poetry but it can be beautifully to listen to as it unites us, an audible force in the face of adversity.

Emotionally intricate but rushed through, maybe we need to be braver and spend a little more time in the ‘Season of the Sticks’ to truly appreciate the warmth of summer.

It is the busiest time of year but it must be this way to bring joy to each other on the big day.The frantic searches for sellotape the debates over what to get for that one odd family member and the sweaty trips through shopping centres all become worth it, sat surrounded by tendrils of eagerly torn wrapping paper, revealed presents buried in Christmas confetti, families, friends and lovers all find themselves under the tree, either experiencing or re-experiencing that unrivalled sense of joy once felt as a child.

As we age we realise that it is not some jolly man and his magic elves that make these moments (spoiler) but the people we hold close around us, it is not about the parcels under the tree but the people that put them there.

I originally heard this song with my Mother when I was 8. We were watching Mamma Mia and mother and daughter, Donna and Sophie were preparing for Sophie’s wedding watching with Donna painting Sophie’s toenails, me not understanding why my mother wold weep during this part but joining in with eh anyway, perceiving it through the film whilst my mother watched it in reality.

Covering it back in 2021 over an instagram live Declan McKenna has finally realised his rendition of Abbas greatest sad song, listening to it feels like a poignant punishment, as you imagine everything that could have been if it was different compared to how it is and finding happiness in that.

With new album ‘What Happened To The Beach?’ set to be released on February 9th, perhaps Declan is easing us into his new era.Still faithful to the original McKenna’s take on ‘Slipping through my fingers’, appears softer, more raw, like an observer to a departure rather than the one being departed from. His acoustic guitar reverberating through the track demonstrates how natural this final wave is yet how disputing it can feel. There is no reassuring chorus like that seen in the film or in the original by ABBA, there is just a feeling of mournful melencholy as we try to find peace with the inevitability of adulthood and unfair farewells. We learn to forgive each other for our failures and forget all the ‘adventures we planned’ but didn’t do in the face of new forged paths that this farewell makes way for.

Listening to it now, 9 years later, with a different narrator,I still think of my mum, I think of us dancing to Abba’s hits together, hairbrushes and pepper mills as make shift microphones.Our living room the Pyramid Stage as we performed ABBA’s greatest hits, steering away from ‘Slipping through my fingers’ to avoid sobbing. I sob as I watch those memories,160 miles away from her. But it is also the younger versions of myself I weep for, the realisation that time does pass and often too quickly, your early 20s split into separate lifetimes, high school feels like eons ago and although you graduated uni less than a year ago, you were surely a child then and now you have a car, a house a promotion.

It’s all happened too fast and you find yourself slipping through your own fingers along with everyone else that once held you close. 20s, the decade we scrabble around trying to fix the fragments of shattered dreams and broken hearts in a desperate hope to piece ourselves back together  only to realise the pieces don’t fit  with each other anymore because you have someone new, and that is okay. 1989 us an artistic renaissance, a testament to reinvention, a celebration of what could be, what is and what is no longer, it is facing the change and doing so with a smile.

1989 saw the singer reinvent herself, transitioning from country to release the most iconic pop album this century has seen. She made what the media portrayed as a mess into a magnum opus, a full on Monet. An incomplete jigsaw is not pretty until finished but the joys and frustration of getting it to that point are what make it art. 1989 is a musical mosaic, showcasing shards of Taylors life up to the point of release. Listening to this album now many of us may have moved out or are at least waiting to take that step and this serves as a reminder that leaving your comfort zone is something to celebrate.

Optimism defines this track, with pulsing synthesisers and programmed drums, it is potential coming into fruition, the start of something magical. It captures the momentary emotion of making it and having done so alone.

It’s also a rallying cry for equality, an audible demonstration of allegiance with the LGBTQIA+ community. The lines ‘And you can want who you want, Boys and boys and girls and girls’ released at a time when same sex  marriage was not yet legalised in all fifty states, shimmering so brightly. Although Swift has confirmed she is not part of the community she is a clear ally in its movement.

You are often undermined and sometimes made to feel utterly alone but you can learn to take the power from that narrative and use it to build your own.

The tongue in cheek satire of Blank Space is still so relevant to Swift’s social life now, speculation surrounding boyfriends, exes but she rises above, reclaiming the narrative and making it bow to her. As an electro-pop song it boasts a timeless quality and it contains many of my favourite lines including “ Darling I am a nightmare dressed like a daydream” and “Boys only want love if its torture’. Swift was once America’s sweetheart, a girl next door- Miss. Americana but it seems her relationship with the media blew up when it claimed everybody she set eyes upon was her next prey, making her out to be a man eating psychopath which is exactly the narrative she presumes in this song.

Track 4: Out Of The Woods

Questioning the foundations of what were once fundamentals, teenage true love, a paper promise of eternity, now turns to lingering eyes, strangers smile, hands held tighter, you’re left wondering if you’ll last the while. Until you’re in the heavy midst of your twenties people tell you that you are young, you can do this, there is so much time to build your dreams and then you’re 23 and your peers push you into the ocean of impatience, their seeming success serving as an awakening that you are temporary and there is never enough time, everything has to be now or it will never be.

Out Of The Woods (Taylor’s Version)

Out of the woods is a desperate attempt to make sense of a relationship that should work out well but neither of you can ever get it right leaving you constantly question “If you’re in the clear yet?”. This relationship digs a whole within you that you try to fill using the same shovel, holding their hand in that space between you hoping it will bring you closer only for it to tear you apart.

Our 20s are defined by a constant feeling of business whilst seemingly standing still, you see friends marry, excel in their career, move on and leave home whilst you’re just watching, waiting, the stability held in place by the last sprinkles fo childhood magic still lingering on from your teens simply drifts away, leaving you in the dark. If you look for the issues you will find them but in reality this is your space to reclaim yourself, finally make a name for yourself.

You conclude that if something good happens then that is the anomaly. Perfection is a place for tourist not natives, some of us may be lucky enough to stay there for a week, most of us will wander down it’s immaculate pathways, a daunting detour before we stumble back on to collages of gum on a wet and windy Thursday.

Love is ferocious but it is fragile, it is delicious and delicate, it can sting you whilst singing. It is confusing and beautiful people will peck at it, leaving you with crumbs you either have to walk away from or work to produce a loaf out of, it is work but it can be so worth it.

Track 8:Bad Blood

Leaving Uni an looking for a new job you think cliques are finally a thing of the past, that you will be able to swim in a pool full of reasonable people, that, like you, just want to be allowed to breathe peacefully filling their life with purpose. But purpose is a powerful thing and when one feels powerless their purpose can become about dragging you down from the pedestal they have placed you on. Betrayal from a once close friend can leave you feeling alone, your blood boiling. 

This song celebrates the strength of friendship in the face of adversity, coming together against threats, a homage to genuine connections. The stomping drums the sound of defiance in the face of destruction, Swift rallies up her remaining friends in a harmonized battle cry, the memorable music video showcasing an ensemble cast. In life we will lose those we once loved but that does not mean we must lose ourselves too.

 What is armour if there is only one of you on the battlefield? What is an army without union? A power anthem, a chorus of community, Swift showed us she was a force to be reckoned with.

Track 16:New Romantics

‘Heartbreak is the national anthem/ we sing it proudly’.

‘New Romantics’ is a satirical slice  bout those that find hobby in heartbreak and do it happily because they are carless and free. Romance is whimsical it’s all about dancing, you and me, and them and he. It introduces an indie edge to her pop repertoire , fusing what was to what is to create an explosively positive anthem that applauds spirited living.

The New Romantics culture movement that permeated the late 70s and 80s was characterised by its flamboyance and eccentricity, celebrating differences and looking for a more whimsical way to live. Here Swift faces a new found energy, recovering from heartbreak and betrayal, she breathes in a new era of romance. Hedonism defines this track, welcome to a world where ‘ We are too busy dancin’ to get knocked off our feet, finding enjoyment in what you were once made to endure, the world can be yours

Love is not a fairy-tale but that doesn’t mean it can’t be fun, you’re young, you’re old, you’re in love or you’re alone, you can always find a reason to not take life so seriously.

The Vault Tracks

Slut! (Taylor’s Version) (From The Vault)

“Slut!” Follows on from who she is in Blank Space, an ode to a woman who finds her self in the public eye and in love. The media project their many eyes on to her, painting her out to be the obsessive one that hunts men when in reality the media are the only hunters, craving their next hurtful headline, it is not Swift who is the villain in the relationship but the media. Shamed and targeted for being like any of us, a victim of the camera lens, Swift always finds magic in the mean, here she lets herself be in love and if they call her a slut then ‘You know it might be worth it for once”.

The Final song Is It Over Now? A savage addition to her poignant repertoire, offering s blunt rendition into the aftermath of a relationship. It has a cinematic opening, you are left in suspense before her angelic vocals cut through, you know whatever comes next is going to be  powerful, a wave slapping the shore, the striking line “You dream of my mouth before it called you a lying traitor’ demonstrating the extremity of the fall out. Perhaps the bitter brutality that becomes this track is an echo of what is on it’s way…

The speculation surrounding who the vault tracks are disusing are irrelevant to me. The entire narrative of 1989 is Taylor’s attempt to transition into what she believes the media wanted from her, Pop culture, to be America’s sweetheart again so she tried to be satirising their image of her and spending more time with her female friends.

Swift is rarely, if ever allowed to be enjoyed just as her and her music, she has to be perceived through the media sense of who is she dating, many of her fans and foes questioning why has she written this and guessing who it must be about? 1989 is about Taylor moving on from that, investing in herself and taking a more reserved road. yTo often we find ourselves looking for who  we  are in the lives of strangers, looking for who to hate on because we may be approved by our peers because of it. 

Why try to find yourself in place you have never been,  why be someone you are not just because someone else will hold their gaze a second longer, you will not find who you are in the eyes of others, just like you can’t find something you have lost in a room you have not stepped into. I think we should enjoy this catalogue of her life respectfully and not pry into her love life, rather just enjoy the music.

Overall 1989 Taylor’s Version is all about change and transition and for many of us listening to the original 9 years ago, much change has ensued and we can enjoy those once tracks of our adolescence  once again but now in our adulthood. Swift is the soundtrack to our lives and many of us feel as though we have grown up beside her. Letting go of scrabbling hands to finally hold yourself is the greatest freedom, which is what Taylor does with this album, losing them to find herself.

Easy Life To Change their name after legal case.

Easy Life have not had an easy run of it lately. Forming in 2017, Easy Life made up of Murray Matravers (vocals/keyboards), Samuel Hewitt (guitar), Oliver Cassidy (guitar), Lewis Berry (bass), and Jordan Birtles (drums), released their debut album ‘life’s a Beach’ in 2021 and their second ‘Maybe in another life’ in 2022, both surging to second place on the UK top charts, seeing them stand on stages at Reading, Leeds and Not festival, all a true testament to their musical prowess and their connection to their fans. Sadly their sub sequential success has been a factor in their fall.

Recently they came under fire from conglomerate,easyGroup, owners of easy Jet, who claimed that Easy Life were ‘brand thieves’ and filed a lawsuit claiming their name infringed on a trademark. On October 10th the band surrendered their name and put on an impromptu farewell tour. Although this is goodbye to Easy Life as we know them it is not goodbye forever with the band vowing to return in the future, same faces, same sound just with a different name change.

Frontman Murray Matravers shared a statement on instagram in response to the situation,’Sadly, it seems that justice is only available to those who can afford it. We simply don’t have the funds to access a fair trial in the high court. Not to mention the fact that this would likely rattle on through to 2025, and with this hanging over us we wouldn’t be able to release any music in the meantime. Our careers, and indeed our lives, would be on hold’

Their final song as Easy life, titled “Trust Exercises,” was released on Friday the 13th. It serves as a heartfelt tribute to their friends, family, and the power of friendship. Throughout the song, Easy life embraces the spirit of resilience in the face of adversity, defying obstacles with a resolute determination. “Trust Exercises” encourages listeners to seek the positive amidst difficult times and to find solace in the midst of chaos. It is a reminder to focus on the good and to always search for the metaphorical sun, even during the darkest storms.

The band shared the release in an instagram with the caption: “‘Trust Exercises’ with a caption explaining that the song has been written over 6 years ago. Since then it’s faced countless changes/edits/tweaks. The band explained how they ‘were always waiting for the right moment to drop [Trust Exercises] but it never felt right and new material always got priority”, but it seems there is a strong silver lining in this case and it comes in the form of this song.

This may be the last we have heard from Easy Life but the boys will return.

Midnight Rodeo’s latest release “Thank you for your time” is an ode to the under appreciated worker.

Effortlessly ethereal, and exquisitely other worldly Midnight Rodeo’s new track Thank you for you time’ is an ode to the alienated, underpaid worker. Audibly alluring, a siren song, this is the music your mind listens to as it wanders off from it’s 9-5 reality, a customer is being out of order with you, your boss has just made an inappropriate comment, but you are elsewhere, escaping, dreaming knowing where you are is not where you’ll always be.

Made up of Midnight Rodeo is Maddy Chamberlain (vocals, tambourine), James McBride (guitar, vocals), William Crumpton (guitar, vocals), Harry Taylor (bass), Ferg Moran (drums), the Midnight Rodeo are a Nottingham based band who formed in 2021. Since then they’ve supported the likes of FEET,Black Doldrums and The Bug Club, establishing themselves as trailblazers in the indie/psychedelic pop scene.

‘Thank you for you time’ introduces a slight departure from the band’s thus far signature West Coast psychedelic stylings as they continue to diversify their sound.A dynamically rich lead guitar line dances around the ethereal vocal melody and driving bassline, all three elements responding to one another intuitively as the track builds through two anthemic choruses to one final heavy metal homage.

Lyrcially, Lead singer Maddy Chamberlain stands in solidarity with under-appreciated junior staff member, anyone that’s ever had to serve a piss-drunk stag party at a nightclub, suffered the cringe-inducing pantomime of a sales job or endured the eye-rolling shenanigans of a David Brent-esque line manager. It’s a vindicating dedication to the individual .

If it were for another era you could imagine them touring with the likes of the Beatles. If the painted people in A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte were playing a few instruments and singing a tune it would sound like “Thank you for you time’.

Art Punk tour de Force from Leeds, English Teacher, are back with their latest slice of abstract audio, exploring the brutalise of not prospering from your sacrifices.

Comprised of Lily Fontaine (vocals, rhythm guitar, synth) Douglas Frost (drums, vocals) Nicholas Eden (bass) and Lewis Whiting (lead guitar), the quartet have been releasing music under the moniker of ‘English Teacher’ since 2020. Their latest addition being ethereal “Nearly Daffodils”

Lily Fontaine explained: “‘Nearly Daffodils’ is about heartbreak and acceptance of unfulfilled potential. How, no matter how much you may want something, no matter how much effort you may put into something’s growth or development, no matter how beautiful you can envision its fruition; life is a bitch and about as unstoppable as a freight train”.

In this life, rife with hustle culture, pushing through and defying boundaries, exceeding expectations effotlessly it is easy to drown in the deluge of those all tending their gardens. You can dig, plant, care and hope but sometimes, there is frost and snow, an unstoppable obstacle in the way of letting you reap with you sow.

English Teacher delve masterfully into the agonising heartache of what may not be in ethereal track, Nearly Daffodils which boasts a radiant melody, full of optimism and wonder whilst the choppy instrumentals introduce the storm of overshadowing into the forecast. How will creativity survive your own success? Look around, haven’t you got everything you wanted? Why is there so much space in a slight gap when the room is already full? That gap, that space, the size of failure, something not yet achieved, one more effort to prove yourself, but will you do it? How? When?

What happened to doing something out of true devotion rather than to keep up with someone else, a glass square on a glass screen, unseeing eyes can still feel mean. We are all so focused, so fascinating, it’s frustrating when it feels as though despite the superglue, the tape the nails and the screws, everything always comes loose. To fall is too feel and to feel is to be alive, failure is not a dead end it is a diversion, it is up to you where you go with it.

Nearly Daffodils is the cognitive dissonance of what if and what is. It is hopeful, it is mournful ,it is humanity dressed up as an insightful indie song. It is however hard to pigeon hole into just one genre, somewhere in the haze of layered harmonies, and gritty guitar riffs this song wanders the corridors of the mind, a musical remedy for the mist. Flowing seamlessly from euphonious song to arresting spoken word, this track showcases the creative prowess of the quartet as they cartwheel over metamorphic metaphors and breakdown ballads, to produce a lyrical pool to dive into as you explore your own psyche.

English Teacher’s biting social commentary and unique musical soundscapes have certainly positioned the quartet as influential figures within the emerging indie elite.

Australian band Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers know all about this rude awakening called adulthood, the daunting realisation that you’re on you’re own and all your friends live far away.There’s food in the fridge going out of date and you’ve got bills to pay, but who’s to say you’re no fun anymore?

Made up of Anna Ryan (guitar and vocals), Scarlett McKahey (guitar), Jaida Stephenson (bass) and Neve van Boxsel (drums) the band are setting the tone for new wave indie pop. Formed during a sleepover when they were all in their mid teens back in 2015 in which the teen friends were watching Richard Linklater’s School of Rock. Their song I Used To Be Fun is an allegory of growing up.

From their latest album I LOVE YOU, I Used To Be Fun utilises jagged vocals and shredded guitar riffs the band dissect the notion of ageing, stripping back the once comforting embrace of childhood for the island of independence only to realise , the choices and decisions we make now impact our own lives and shape our future. Embracing adulthood means embracing the uncertainties and complexities that come with it, as we learn to navigate the intricacies of relationships, career paths, and personal growth. It lays the foundations for who they are as a band and what they stand for, challenging any preconceived perceptions this band creates their own prophecy.

Escaping the boundaries of gender identity, they are simply the defining sound of the new era of the music industry, a witty two fingers to those that have denied them the voice to their own musical prowess, their auditory abilities simply because who they are does not fit with predetermined ideals.Despite these prejudicial conceptions the EP is not filled with bitter bangers instead using the opportunity to hold up a mirror to the naysayers, trailblazing the way for a constructive conversation that challenges these archaic beliefs that is holding the industry back.

One of my favourite tracks on this EP the infectious ‘Miss Your Birthday’. This anthem is not just about catchy beats and addictive melodies, it’s a powerful reminder of finding strength when you feel powerless. With their unbreakable bond, undeniable passion, and raw talent, this band is about to blow your mind! Despite the energetic elevation of the track it covers deep distress felt by those facing independence and isolation for the first time, evocative of the lockdowns of 2020 as well as the daunting planet of adulthood.

Guitarist Scarlett McKahey explained that it was a haomge to homesickness, the fine edge between ‘wanting to be back at your Mum’s cosy house without abandoning your new ‘grown up’ life. “. Sometimes to go home does not mean to give in, it allows you to get back to your roots so you can grow again.

Navigating adulthood often feels like being trapped in an intricate escape room, where the clues are written in a language you struggle to decipher. Despite having a place to call your own, you find yourself living out of a suitcase in your childhood bedroom, longing for the comfort of your mother’s cooking. Your housemates, who often seem to be in a perpetual state of chaos, add to the overwhelming journey of adulthood. Although you may have convinced yourself that you’re ready to be a grown-up, deep down, you realize that you’re still a child trapped in a 20’s something’s body, trying to make sense of it all. It can be quite overwhelming at times, so sometimes you have to miss someone’s birthday, if only you could miss your own.

Since 2015 the band has built up quite a repertoire full of soul wrenching ballads, energetic anthems and choral inspired pop classics. Supporting Foo Fighters in Melbourne in December they are on to BIG things and should be on your playlist, especially if you’re not quite ready to grow up yet and you’re definitely still fun…

Ipswich based indie band Afterdrive have spoiled us with their latest single, ‘Bad Vibes’, contrary to the title, it is sure to have you heading straight to that dance floor on your next night out.

Littered with lyrical alarm bells this song is an auditory warning against siren strangers, those that we may look to when we find no other eyes whilst always knowing they could easily leave us behind, we all want the dancing girl until the lights come on and she isn’t smiling anymore.

Made up of Ben Watts on vocals, Luke Ellis on guitar, Ed Ruff on bass and Joe Watts on drums Afterdrive are a Pop/indie band  defined by their distinctive sound that is begingin to turn heads in the indie scene especially as they have already released three singles; a nostalgic indie track called 99 (which we previously reviewed)and their poignant debut release stick Around, it is no surprise they have a worldwide audience, including fans in Mexico City ,Santiago and London setting them up for international success.

The music is loud and the drinks are strong, between the dancing, you get to talking only to realise this person is a walking bad vibe, only making you fall further into their eyes. Through the haze of synth like harmonies, gazey guitar riffs and a proleptic drum beats this song explores the sticky stories smeared on the dancefloor, brought to light by the harsh 6am sun.

Afterdrive

Bad Vibes offer an eye into the emotional inventory of the narrator, a hand emerges from the wreckage of another failed relationship to guide you through the mist once more. The instrumentals offer a useful framework for interpreting the rollicking pop-rock fervour to come especially with the layered vocals, evocative of words running wild, a tennis match argument that leaves both rackets broken, but both players ready and wanting more, the allure of chaos.

Australian Alt-Punk band dust are making a comeback to the UK after a slew of successful shows earlier this year. The quintet will be hitting  Bristol, Manchester, Glasgow, Leeds and Birmingham, culminating in a slot at Pitchfork Music Festival London. Tickets to shows can be bought here.

Known to promote positivity, reduce anxiety and improve concentration, slow flow house music ,such as that featured on dust’s debut EP ‘Et Cetera etc’, invites a deeper connection between your consciousness and subconsciousness, encouraging self reflection. Trippy techno and experimental electronics fuse together over a unique punk rock drive to create the transportive narrative that is this new release.What is music but a testament to human resilience, perseverance and passion?

Dual vocalists, Gabriel Stove and Justin Teale, share the lead microphone, each a collective voice, defining the charisma of a band connected through the sonic maelstrom. The ‘Et cetera, etc’ EP was recorded in its entirety on guitarist-saxophonist Adam Ridgway’s family farm in Edwardsville. Bassist Liam Smith and drummer Kye Cherry complete the 5-piece.

Through warbling saxophone solos and electronic ambience a spiritual yin and yang manifest to demonstrate the power of interconnected forces coming together, this philosophy drives the atmospheric energy of the band’s live shows.

The singles are improvised and innovative, an exposure of the skeletal routes of the conscious plane. Gentle synths swell, and  ambient interludes, morph the self into everything else, a harmonic hand into a higher realm. dust eloquently energise, an audible sip into personal potential.

What does falling in love sound like? The turbulence of a tentative trumpet player, tumultuous like the trombone? Colourful like the sax? It feels like sipping coffee on a sleep Sunday morning, like a hand waiting to catch you. there is a sense of hope, like the rising crescendo of an orchestra reaching its peak.

New release from indie powerhouse The Redroom, ‘Coffee’ explores the effervescent nature of falling in love, through jazz infused instrumentals, new feelings flourish ,the fizz of that first kiss, the grip of the optimistic abyss of not knowing if it’ll happen again, it is the existing of the chrysalis you’re ready to unveil your wings again, this time hopefully they’ll be noticed.

The song itself is metamorphic, showcasing the beginnings of the band and alluding to their future. Vocalist and lyricist Jess Lewis Ward explained that she wrote ‘Coffee‘ when she was 16, during the first lockdown:

I left it in a back pocket for a few years then circled back to it when the band started to explore a different style of writing. It went through quite a few phases before the final finished product, but I feel like it encapsulates our new sound, alongside my younger self. I guess you could say it’s about young love and feeling love romantically properly for the first time.”

Known for their intricate narratives and roadmaps through humanity, The Redroom release music that boasts a poignant tale, such as their previous release The Woman From Nowhere”, ‘Coffee’ continues on this legacy with it’s complex portrayal of a first love, whilst also exploring a new avenue for the band, one that sets them out to be the on ones to watch list for 2024, especially with their Headline show on September the 1st at iconic Newcastle venue The Grove, celebrating the release of their new single.

Continuing to mesh the old with the new, The Red Room have mastered the art of creating their own multi-genre sound backed by Lewis-Ward’s talent for colourful, witty and insightful storytelling. ‘Coffee’ is the band’s first step into a form of new age indie-pop song writing, combining the likes of layered brass with the band’s signature acoustic sound.

That signature sound comes through with an explosion of energy, there is joy in each lyric, groove in each instrumental and power with leach layered harmonies all punctuated by the keyboard and the saxophone.  An eruption of emotion, evocative of the rush you feel when your hand brushes theirs, your eyes hold their stare. Exhilarating and optimistic this song is an audible coffee.

A collage of selves lay scattered, nestled in our memories, our sadness spread in ugly black smudges on the side of silk sheets, a good day in the form of a forgotten earring on an old friend’s nightstand, a favourite teddy still hoping in wait under our childhood bed. We are everywhere but within ourselves.

Lucy Dacus track Night shift explores the cognitive dissonance of a breakup, the longing for what can never be again and the gratitude of what can never be again. A broken heart is a second chance, another go, an opportunity for growth whilst simultaneously being a gaping wound, a gaunt expression with haunted hands and deceitful eyes, convincing you that everywhere you look your lover resides.

This needs to look at them once more but knowing if you saw them again you would look away.  You go to their favourite bar, shop at their favourite store, wearing their favourite outfit and the perfume they once associated with you. Every day you devote your life to a shadow. Last month felt like the future and now where are you, wallowing in the space between where their arms once were and where you are now. but you’re trying to fill it, so you go to work, you wash your face, you go for a run, you keep running, you wash the floor, you go to work, you cry in the storage cupboard, you cry in the woods, standing in your running trainers, head aflame, lungs burning. Why couldn’t I be enough, if love is all we are then why did you leave?

The now iconic line “you’ve got a nine to five, so I’ll take the night shift’ powerfully epitomises the deliberate decision one makes when wanting to avoid a person, peeling ourselves away from who they used to be by forcing ourselves to explore different routes.

Dacus so beautifully navigates the turmoil and resentment dictated by a premature departure of a lover. Her lyrics are hauntingly honest, full of empowering rage, propelled by a steady drumbeat, like a heart in a state of recovery, complimented by the building up riff of the guitar, like a heart in flight or fight mode, this juxtaposition of peace and war creating a heart wrenching symphony that sadly so many can relate too.

Why do we give each other flowers doomed to die? The wilted rose, once so vibrant and routed, sighing, tired in its glass pedestal, once a token of affection, now drooping. Love is a garden, not a diagonally cut stem, it is affected by the weather so you must shelter it, tend to it, keep it safe, respond to its needs, watch it thrive.

Then finally there is a fall of bitter peace, the relief that you can fill your life with stuff that isn’t them, not to distract yourself but because you want to, you start filling your life with light, eradicating all the shadows.

Poignant and insightful the narrator finds a way to forgive, to leave the space and keep the time and take it all in stride. The track, 5 years old, has a timeless quality that allows you to howl in a shared sense of healing agony, a sound of hope that happiness will prosper.

We all have those silly stories we recall with both a sense of shame and glee, reliving those rash decisions we made for the plotline, covering our reddening faces as our friends re-enact some embarrassing stunt we pulled off last Saturday night.Olivia Rodrigo’s second single from her upcoming album Guts Bad Idea Right’ explores the narrative, offering a comedic take on a familiar conundrum.

We eavesdrop on the narrator’s internal monologue as she navigates the intertwining halls of temptation and humiliation, pride and shame. We all know where she’s going to go, as she ‘unintentionally’ gets lost down the rabbit hole of lust, desire and regret, all sympathetically rolling our eyes when she lies unconvincingly pleading that she simply ‘tripped and fell into his bed’.

Bad Idea Right is like reading the girls group chat on a messy night out. Your friends are convincing you that you’re ex is awful, that you’re worth more but you’ve had a wine,a woo woo and a vodka shot or two and it’s only a text, it’s only a taxi it’s only a stumble to his bed, besides you’re just doing what sober you is too proud to do. You’ve been there before so what’s once more?

This internal battle whether to keep your head held high, after all you know your friends are right, or to give in to temptation, you wan them back but it’s not even really like that it’s just a filler, someone to do whilst you wait for true love, being in that bed is as simple as shoulder shrug.Rodrigo is infectious, voicing all the times we’ve given in, falling asleep in the right bed to waking up in the wrong one, the realisation of what we’ve done.

Her debut album Sour explored heartbreak, self worth and identiy whilst her new album, Guts set for release September 8th, seems to be about rebelliousness, self exploration and hedonism in the face of adversity. Self destructive tendencies have the propensity to come disguised as empowerment, especially after a drink, or in a moment of darkness they come heralding a candlelight of serenity that soon turns out to be a burning beacon, setting yourself on fire.

You have a word with yourself in the bathroom mirror of a house party, you laugh as you see their name flash upon your phone, an echo of old times, memories of strawberry ice cream and Billy Joel, but that’s all it is a figure of what once was they can only wave at you, you can never wave back, you can never go back, you can return to their arms, to their sheets but they will be different, as are you, so if you do stumble back there don’t think you’ll be staying.

As we grow we tend to shrink back into the shadows of our former selves, shedding new light in past stories, holding a candle up to who we used to be, tales of misspent youth, underage drinking, to passing exams we were sure we’d fail and final kisses. Still reliving the rivalries, reminiscing over schoolboy errors and mischievous pranks, resisting dreams we were sure we would have achieved by now, looking within to see where we need to go next.

Detailing his second ever release ‘Hold Yr Horses’ explores small town narratives, being 16/17 and getting into drunken scrapes. Bottles filled with blurs, fists reddened and voices raised these were the nights that flooded the days. Ernie describes the song as being a bit “tongue in cheek, I’m kind of poking fun at some of the weird toxic masculinity that was present in the town at the time, but ultimately the song is about a tense and unnerving time of my life.”

Anger and resentment, two complex emotions full of layers the ultimately peel back to reveal fear and vulnerability, the harmonies and instrumentals weaved through Hold Yr horses reflect this, two voices in the fog, an internal conversation, which emotion is guiding you through the darkness? Ernie, a part-time chef, full-time singer-songwriter touches on themes of identity, family, relationships and the trappings of being the “odd one out” in a small northern town within his music.

A cacophony of what could, be this song showcases Ernie’s artistic innovation, exploring the depths of his songwriting capabilities, demonstrating his strength as a singer. The music morphs, the patient tone of the message, encouraging the listener to slow down offers a reassuring hand against the fast paced and suspenseful guitar riff that propels the narrative.

The change in tone effortlessly illustrating the minefield of emotions we once felt as an adolescent, life becomes a stuck lift, limboeing between change and opportunity or face falling back to ground floor but never knowing which buttons to press to calculate success. But with communication and self awareness, those buttons can be pushed into the place, sometimes it just takes the help of a friend, a family member or even courage within ourselves to find the right sequence.

Listening to either are like staying awake into the early hours of a girls sleepover, a couple of margaritas and a few red wines into the night, a face full of chocolate and self care, all of us confessing our controversial crushes and flirtatious fantasies, a room full of laughter, an audible union, we have fun here.

Why can’t I have two hosts my favourite musical line of the year ‘man don’t like to share you nah, have you never heard of something called ménage à trois’ it defines the feel good fun, whiplike wit and insatiable sound that Baser has become renowned for.

The track is propelled by a soft drumbeat, lifted by Baser’s hard hitting vocals, you can hear her laughter in each syllable. This groovy pop beat banger will stay in your head all day, it’ll have dancing on your commute to work, toe tapping at your desk and on top of tables come Friday night.

DILF by Caity Baser 2023

DILF is definitely risqué, controversial and one you wouldn’t play at your boyfriends parents house but that’s what makes it all the more enjoyable. Baser divulges into a narrative, confessing feelings for a partner’s father, a DILFy distraction from a flirtatious fling. Lingering eyes are definitely bound to make the relationship awkward, if he’s looking at you but you’re looking at his dad, but Baser makes it fun in her no filter, sparklingly sharp way. The song itself is upbeat, with layered harmonies offering a comedic, choral element to it, its okay because everyone finds him fit. The sublime blend of melody and sing speaking to create that uplifting feel of familiarity, a call back to the noughties when Lilly Allen was Queen is what makes this track so delicious.

What makes it more sensational, DILF is based on a real life scenario, about Baser’s friends father who she described as “So hot – he was in the navy and it’s so distracting when I go over. I’ve never made a tune about DILFs before so I’m happy I’ve explored this concept and had so much fun when doing it too.”

Baser seems to be living her best life, building up her fan base and playing a slew of festivals including YNOT, Boardmasters, Reading and Leeds. Baser is the first pop of champagne on a Friday night, she is waking up and feeling fine after drinking several glasses, maybe a bottle or two, she is the cheers to youth and putting yourself first, reminding us that if it’s not fun its not for you.

Indie Powerhouse The Publics release explosive new track: Karen’s Song.

We all know one, we’ve all heard the horror stories, some of us have even been unfortunate enough to endure one, the Karen experience is a memorable one. In the moment a source of rage but later a laughable dinner time anecdote, the Karen is defined by their outrageous rhetoric and need to micromanage strangers in the streets. Never satisfied, the Karen lives to complain.

Yet the Karen creatures ways have inspired viral trends, haircuts and now an energy infused song by indie favourite The Publics. Infused with wit and attitude Karen’s song is a trumpet driven, tongue in cheek homage to all those so called ‘Karens’ in the music industry. With a propulsive drum beat, distinctive guitar solos and a booming baseline The Publics have once again delivered, this time dropping the sound of summer, one that will give you the audible armour to show Karen the door before they even open their mouths.

Its a song so good Karen themselves would probably be inclined to tap their foot too it, a song dedicated to their relentless mission. It offers the schoolboy charm of rebuttalling a teacher who’s out of place, mischievous yet assertive Karen’s song like the creature itself gets stuck in your head, but this time for all the right reasons, for those of you that have listened to the tack I bet those additive “da dada da dada da’ have come back to the forefront of your brain, hopefully they’ll be there, blocking any Karens out.

Lead guitarist, Elliot Stephenson, has described the song as “a party from start to finish, with the single’s chanty chorus, a fitting juxtaposition to the relentless nagging of a textbook ‘Karen’. The track is proven in winning over large crowds unleashing dance moves from the masses, with a recent live performance even enticing a standing ovation from an audience member in a wheelchair”

Maybe it is the refreshed format that have got the band landing on the right ears, since Bassist Tom Scott (formerly of The Crooks) and drummer Ollie Siggee joined the band in April, alongside established trio: Josh Porter (Lead Vocals/Guitar), Elliot Stephenson (Lead Guitar) and Ebony Broughton
(Keyboard/trumpet) the band have seen debut performances at Splendour and YNOT? festival.

Although this does come after a slew of successful gigs, including a sold out headline show at Rough Trade a sold-out Rough Trade supporting the likes for music giants The Reytons, Reverend
and the Makers and Corella, it is perhaps just the feel good formula The Publics posses that is finally landing them their well deserved success.

A formula that is seeing them perform on some of the biggest stages of their career in late 2023; Supporting The sherlocks at rock city and playing alongside noughties favourites McFly at Camper Calling and headlining their own show at The Bodega on December 2nd.

Embroidered with escapism, her voice offers a surreal experience, entering a dreamlike soundscape, it feels as though you’re listening to the songs with the sun in your eyes, you’re laying on the grass and you are comfortable. A future version of yourself forms as a silhouette, with indistinguishable features this shadow becomes a beacon of security and support providing welcome shade from the light, you feel solid, more human than before.

Eccentric and flamboyantly authentic this EP explores art, mythology and multi-dimensional forces, acheiving an audible experience unlike any other. Songs that feel like upturned earth after a thunderstorm, like blossoming violets in winter.

The EP started as an echo of what it would become 10 years ago when Circe was still a teenager. Witnessing the boisterous and brilliant, critically acclaimed play Jerusalem by the delectable Jez Butterworth, Circe was transported, exposed to an unexplored realm full of new selves and potential. Riot of Sunlight, the opening track to the EP was written as the first incarnation, becoming a display like ode to Jerusalem.

We are all the Universe, experiencing each other as we experience ourselves, strangers, curious strangers hoping to find a guiding light someone who will bring us back to who we are, or show us how to be the people we are meant to become. We are al mesmerised by a peaceful lake after hours int he dark wood, that once too fascinated us, a journey through the mist, we are all reaching for each other. Perhaps I too am reaching, but this EP touches on that, becoming that journey, a testament to our existence and what we all endure.

Glow by Circe

Glow offers an orchestral exploration of the soul, leaving us questioning ourselves,  we wonder what echoes  will we leave behind, if our actions define our essence what should we do and who should we listen to. Here, Circe sounds distorted, a distant voice that borderlines on disoriented with her delivery which makes it that much more divine to digest. Her humming feels like a heartbeat the driving force that guides the listener through an unravelling road she is the halo, the lighthouse we are searching for. A blend of electronic beats and reality epitomises my interpretation of her music, the ethereal fantasy and the monotonous reality, it is a cacophony of what could be, an ode to living happily.

True to her name Circe’s songs host a certain sort of magic one may search for, for years only to find it under a fossilised pebble at the steps their town library a day after they’d giving up the journey. She is hypnotic, offering a kaleidoscope of different perspectives she shares through her sounds.

My Boy Aphrodite by Circe

A stand out track of  the EP is ‘My Boy Aphrodite’. Harmonic and deity like this song starts off as a rippling harp until an electronic sounding dagger slices through this illusion of peace and tranquilly, a strobe of reality akin to divine revelation breaking through to Circe’s captivating vocals, she is Zeus in this song commanding attention and power through her mesmerizing voice.

Aphrodite is the epitome of beauty, a beacon of sexuality. Circe discussed that her childhood best friend inspired the song; “a boy that used to wear my dresses and I would wear his suits. Both from nowhere, he saved my life, together we were goddesses, adorned in glitter and smiling faces music to the disapproval of the townsfolk.

It’s also an ode to Bjork’s Venus as a boy a song and phrase that just blew open our baby teen world. Even though we didn’t have the vocabulary at the time, we were working through the sparkly fields of gender and queer identity questions, and the feelings we had about it all – in the safety net of a magical, surreal  Bjork song”

‘Healthy Mind’ released by Emily Howard

An outstretched hand on the journey through grief.

Emily Howard, a talented musician, recently released , “Healthy Mind,” featured on her album titled “Good Grief.” This emotionally charged track delves deep into the complexities of navigating grief, offering listeners a raw glimpse into tragedy. With a delicate balance of humor, hope, and moments of profound despair, Howard’s hauntingly beautiful composition strikes a chord with our innermost emotions.

This song also serves as a reminder that sometimes, putting yourself first does not equate to selfishness in actuality it equates to survival. Despite such a strong emotion, Howard demonstrates there is sometimes peace in a storm with her effortlessly empowering Jazz influenced vocals.

After losing her boyfriend in a motorbike accident when she was 17 , her album Good Grief offers an honest and insightful, outstretched hand on others who have also been pushed onto this unfortunate journey. Grief encompasses the sorrow and pain that follows a major unexpected change in our lives whether it be divorce, losing a job or the sudden loss of a loved one. It is an experience that transcends language and affects each individual uniquely. Numbness settles in, a spectre of who you once were this should of silence and eruption of inner turmoil, our once known world now an alien planet. As time passes, emotions surge, fluctuating between anger, sadness, and profound longing for what once was. Grief is an uninvited companion that walks beside us, reminding us of the depth of our love and the irreplaceable void left behind. It is a process of learning to navigate life without the physical presence of the one we mourn, while still cherishing the memories and the impact they had on our lives. It is an uninvited teacher, demonstrating the fragility of existence and the resilience of the human spirit. Through grief, we learn to honour and remember, to find solace in the bittersweet beauty of the past, and to forge a renewed sense of purpose in the wake of loss.

The normality of life can sometimes feel dehumanising, the whirring of your brain after a week in front of a blank screen pressing buttons in a sequence to get paid a set of numbers. The dreams you drank up have drained from you stolen by the laws of society, the need for compliance. It’s ironic then that the very creation of this LP challenges the monotony of this conformity.

Talking to NME about their new album at the start of 2023, The Lottery Winners frontman Thom Rylance said: “I’ve always told my story in our songs. If you’re telling your own story, it’s never going to be boring. When I started assembling these songs, I realised that everyone I wrote was getting a bit lighter, feeling progressively less down.

An omniscient narrator introduces the album as an audible therapy. You are instantly immersed in the kaleidoscope of your mind, are you worried about what you might find? How will you recover what is lost if you do not search for it?

Worry

Who are you when your head is full of worry? Trying to navigate your way through life whilst your mind is jumping to the direst conclusions takes a toll on the soul. Accompanied by raw visuals, depicting the honest scene of a depression pit, a tray from a takeaway you had two weeks ago festering by your bed, a pile of pills on the cabinet, unpaid bills glaring up at you from your nightstand. Every intention to face the day, fully dressed and ready but your funky, floral bedding becomes a straitjacket forcing you to stay.

Punctuated by the discarded first edition copy of the picture of Dorian Gray it can be interpreted that this song discusses the curse we all feel, lamenting our youth, wanting to revisit it and savour our innocence, haunted by who we could have been if we were parented differently, but then they wouldn’t be who we are and would only end up missing them. Gray also suffers from an addiction, an indulgent drug infused escapism that only imprisons you to a false face of reality.

This track echoes the familiar verve and energy from The Lottery Winners but also recreates the imploding pressure your brain puts upon itself in times of desperation. Each track stands as an individual anthem but all work together to reflect a year of frontman Rylance’s life.

Sometimes we stay in burning houses just to stay warm, there are fires on the stairs so we stay safe in the living room, the TV loud enough to drown out the roar of the inferno so it becomes nothing more than a whisper, but we know it’s still there. Burning questions feed the flames as you ask yourself who you have become, who you are to the flames and plead with them to stop burning, but that is what a fire does, it destroys.

Katie Lloyd, electric bassist for the band, dominates the track with her uplifting energy,a complete contrast to the depth of the song offering an insight into how some of us act when everything is falling down, stoicism, the danger of saying you’re fine when you’re bleeding through your badly wound bandages.

Money

Featuring Shaun Ryder this song explores what it might feel like to live how we all deserve to life, freely. But how possessing a certain amount of money after having none can corrupt the mind, the more you spend the more you lose your sense of self. Fine line between worth ad greed but when you’ve worked hard, peeling your eyes red to stay alert on that late night shift, picking up more to make ends meet, you have a right to a little touch of luxury.

Outside of this it’s a satirical reflection on what many musicians hope to achieve, after juggling odd jobs, playing countless gigs to half empty rooms, headlining stages getting albums, sharing their success and doing what they love full time. It’s a lesson that, ART, which enriches the soul, offers a hand out of mess is so neglected by finance that the struggling, starving artist has become romanticised, if you’re not suffering you’re not doing it right, but talent should be celebrated, it should be invested in, art is pure, it’s the only thing we have to help us through.

Long Way Down

A loss of inspiration can send anyone into a sorrowful state of desperation, screaming out to find yourself, only hearing echoes of who you could have been if you had achieved the dream, you sold your soul to achieve. Who could you be if you could go back to your birth and bring yourself up? Resenting your parents for not being the people you needed them to be. Your brain doesn’t feel like your own anymore, tired and run down you cry for who you once were.

Sertraline

What is a skill if it cannot be shared, why sing a song if it won’t be heard, why make art if nobody cares? We live for other people so when there is no one around us why do we continue? When we are lost where do we search? The last place we left of, when did you last see yourself? In a childhood memory? As you rest your head, where does it fall? On the floor of your first home? Who were you then where you used to roam?

Pause

The audible exploration comes to a halt, forcing us to re-connect with reality, has our mindset changed? Will it? The narrator asks us to acknowledge that colours may seem brighter, and we may feel lighter, and then he asks us to imagine our childhood bedroom, the smaller version of who we once were, stares vacantly back at us as we open the door.

We live our lives in hindsight, wishing we could reverse time in the hope it would change our current situation, but who’s to say if we had enjoyed those days of simplicity, when a summer’s day was full of magic and the biggest stress was completing that week’s homework that anything would be different now?

The only way to change your current situation is by facing yourself and doing it differently. Find forgiveness in reflection, thank your parents for doing what they could, releasing too that they are still human, they were learning too. Sometimes reflection is the only way we can move forward realise that ‘it’s not all plain sailing’ there will be ‘times you’re in front and times that you’re failing’ but this is human and that’s all we can be.

It’s the monotony of life you breathe then you die, trapped in a cycle trying to get by. You seek help and people wonder why, that’s just life mate, that’s the way it’s going to be. If this is normality, sell me a fantasy let me breath in some wonderland, promise me you’ll hold my hand?  Through love we escape, ‘travelling to a place where the sun and ocean kiss’ an eternal bliss surely that’s the true meaning of all this, not to work all day in a place we hate.

Let Me Down- Boy George

Enter a neon world full of potential and possibility, drink in the lights and look alive, this is the start of your dazzling new life. ‘Let Me Down’ came from Rylance’s interest in researching pop icons and understanding what makes a song a classic. 

He shared that he was listening to a lot of Boy George’s music and ended up writing a song for him to sing without realising it. The video itself pays homage to George’s career, flamboyant, a beacon paving the way to the next generation of artists.

Tackling insecurity, this track is empowering an audible armour against all those that were supposed to be there for us yet time and time again fail us, from our friends, to our families, to ourselves. Boy George’s vocals are expectedly energetic, powerful yet soothing, voice through all the noise whilst Rylance, Katie Lloyd and Rob Lally add further layers of therapeutic splendour, making this song a cinematic piece.

You’re Not Alone 

A song that reaches out to you whatever it is you’re going through, you have an audible army, marching alongside you in your ears.

This realisation can take a while, in your state you may have pushed people away but there will always be somebody to turn to, there is always someone that cares. When you see a stranger in the street crying, do you worry for them? Do you wonder what’s wrong? Go to them, offer a voice, a hand. We are not alone, ever it just takes the courage to ask for help to realise.

Anxiety Replacement Therapy

This song is a testament to transformation. When it comes to change, we believe it must be a phenomenon, having blonde hair to black, from being fat to having abs, learning the first few chords to writing a song, we celebrate change when it is instantaneous, without realising everything is gradual. The final verse to this track reflects on the album, with references to previous tracks.

“I used to worry about money now I worry about health
Wrote a letter to myself but I left it on the shelf
I’m in a burning house and I’ve gotta get out
But I’m looking out the window, it’s a long way down

Our narrator has understood his situation, indulged in and is now trying to change it, seeking prescribed medication, reaching out to friends and looking for ways out of the burning house. Our narrator is trying to be better for themselves, because to be there for ourselves is all we can ask.

Our omniscient narrator addresses us, a refreshing taste of reality, we are awake in our nightmare now, we can leave this place.

From recently reaching number one, to being in the full throttle of their UK tour The Lottery Winners the band are gritty, colourful and raw. Reality is the core of their sentiments, reflecting on their success Rylance explained: “I always knew we’d do it the hard way. We’re from a working-class mining town in the northwest of England. We’re not from London, we don’t have famous dads. We’re just trying our best, and if people connect to our music, that’s authentic.”

You’ve fallen in love with a person that feels like a party. The lights just seem to find them, they know every word to the songs on a stranger’s playlist, each beat they move expertly to. The drinks are sweet and your surrounded by friends, time is moving too quickly on the night you don’t want to end but then they’re still at it yet it’s 6 am you wonder when you’ll be home again, your glass is empty and your ears are numb, but their eyes are searching for you, so you continue to move, smile stuck to your face.

You dance, you drink, you stay for them because leaving arm in arm is better than leaving alone. You feel as though you’re in love with a ghost but being haunted is better than being abandoned. Your world is built for them whilst you’re barley a yard of tarmac in theirs, but that doesn’t matter because at least you are there and when their eyes find yours you exist and, in that moment, you know you are everything. You spend your time finding ways to find that fire, you want to burn for them.

In their song Saturn Stars artist The Boy In The Rose Garden explores similar semantics, falling for the person that dropped you, hoping they’ll be the one to catch you. You are only the person of their dreams because you only matter to them when they’re asleep.

The ethereal vocals entrance you just as the previous lovers once had, you’re death to the eery undertone, a sinister nod to your foreboding future, a sound that places you in a disorientating mist, the confusion of what is is to be in love with someone who seemingly once felt the same for your but now sees you as thick dust on the fireplace, noticed just before a guest comes over.

Their words whip into you, but you’re just happy to bleed for them, to show them you truly love them, to show your devotion as they turn their back on your bones, you’ve learned to feel at home with the sense of being alone. Let go? Would you let go of all that you have When all you have to your name is a stone it becomes a jewel, a throne. You’re home a haunted house full of whispers of who used to roam the halls, figments of what once was but can never be again, the bare body of what could have been, where you throw your keys and lay your head. You had nothing, they provided you with a rag, you use it to wash my skin, bandage your wounds to cover your frail frame as you lay to rest. Holding out your empty hands and your full heart you declare, “this is all I have, and it is my kingdom, if it costs me my life it will have been worth it”.

If you were a candle, you would set yourself alight to aid their journey to bed in the dead of night. If there were no food in the fridge you would volunteer your soul to keep them fed until Sunday. If all their clothes were to rip you would peel off your skin to keep them. Loving them is the passion that comes with knowing you would give yourself up for them to go on, for who are you to take from the living?

You are the whisper to their crowded room. A crease in their new shoe. You’re being held close, but your being used as a shield protecting them from themselves, what weapons id you bring to a war you did not know you would be fighting? Every bullet they shoot at you reflects how they view themselves, and you willingly make yourself a larger target, convinced you can take it if they promise to love you. That’s all you ask, love me you cry as they feast of your flesh, love me you beg as they wash their hands with your tears, love me you weep as they use your body as a punching bag, at least when they touch you, you are worthy.

Self produced, Saturn Stars ,in itself, is a testament to resilience, an audible lighthouse when you’re in the depths of the dark sea, just because you’re drowning does not mean you should grab onto the first thing that feels solid, a rock will just drag you down deeper, find your lifeboat.

Hilla Peer releases EP, Remind Me Who I Am.

We all have times when we need to be told who we are.

Throughout our lives there will be times when we are less than thriving, getting through the day and calling it surviving. Activites that once brought us joys are now just tiring. There are days we don’t need to stand in front of the mirror to know we look good but there are others when we sit, entranced, scrutinising every stretch mark, every line, wishing for it to change. A spilled coffee on a new skirt, a train missed with seconds to spare, a phone with no messages, does anybody care?

Sickness and anger, days lost to darkness and nights spent awake. This need to hide away, to cry uncontrollably and swear at the stars, can all be a remedy but it’s also important to step into the sun, try to see the art in the spilled mess and enjoy the time between the next train. Sometimes all you need is something to remind you of who you are and Hilla’s EP does that expertly.

Track one: Remind me who I am.

The EP is born with a soft piano ballad, soothing and romantic, a tale that navigates the feeling of doing so much and getting nowhere, the confusion of inertia in motion whilst the energetic crescendo of the chorus pulls us into reality; we are still ourselves despite our surroundings, and we can over come how disorientating life without routine can be, and then how to mange the monotony of a routine we didn’t choose, juggling the dance of identity and social conformity, learning to mould our world to fit our own needs and realising we only have ourselves to live for and who we are should be enough to get us through.

Addiction Baby offers a contrasting upbeat feel that’s fun to dance to despite depicting the details of a toixc relationship that cements itself to your mind, fixating on one person and forgetting yourself. Characetrised by its catchy lyrics and optimistc beat this song reflects hwo many of us feel when submerged in a smothering relatiosnhip, at first we are hoepful that things will be different, yet a few months down the line we are still waiting on that promise delivery of change.

Illustrating how memories can become addictive, we replay scenarios,changing them to reflect how we wish they had played out can become a pastime, idealising certain people, that in reality are actually quite toxic, but learning to realsie this comes with time, and letting them go can take even longer. When the situation is buried it’s importnat to reflect and forgive yourself for staying.

One of a Kind is an ode to self love. As one of th emost complicated strains of love, coming to terms with who we are takes practice. We tend to perceive most of who we are through the eyes of others, our parents, lovers, bosses, and friends,who we are rides upon how they see us. We find ourselves asking them how we can be better, what they ecpect from us and how we can exceed this, exhausitng oursleves to be something we are not, feeling as though we must constantly balance who we are with how we are seen and trying to fall comfortably in-between leading to a crisis of self.

Here Hilla celebrates how it is to act authentically, remaining true to your own identity, the one you have decided for yourself, reminding us that we are one of a kind. Relinquish you’re own power by telling yourself you are who you are an dif you’re ging to be anything different it is because you chose to change. This song clebrates transformation and changes and introduces a more optimsitic light to the EP.

Secure in who she is this song clebrates how Hilla has grown both in all aspect so fher life, finally feeling a sense of security within who she come to be. This track encourages the listner to keep on going, doing what they’re doing and refusing anyone that tries to hold them back.

Life is contant and there is always someone else to be thinking o, you may be a parent with a partner, with a friend’s brihtday to plan and school dinners to make, a house to clean and work emails to answer , most days you manage it all without so much of a nod of gratitude but htere are days when the workload is too much, you’re fed up and you’ve had enough, it’s time to find time for yourself, with the kids in bed and the brithday card sent it’s time to focus on you, relive your youth.

Stick this track on and have a sing along, take time to remember who you are and forget your surroundings, be grounded and present with who you are, forget who you are trying to be and who you were, be with yourself how you are now and feel at peace.

The EP ends in surrender, allwoing you to lay down your weapons, putting away the sword you have been busy sharpening your sword only to find you were preparing for the wrong battles, too busy trying to carry other people’s weight. Sometimes the war is worth it, emotions need to be expressed and situations need to be solved but what’s the point in wasting your energy if it falls on deaf ears. Fight the battles for the person you want to make peace with. Most break ups feel like a battle, one person fighting to leave the other fighting for love, scenarios are directed and dreams are discarded, you can’t win when you’re broken hearted. Sometimes though it’s more about debating, a silken hand on the train platform as the carriage chugs away. Both deflated, there’s a lack of hatred just a mutual understanding that sometimes to leave it to love. Similar semantics are showcased in Ellur’s latest single Anywhere, an optimistic take on heartbreak, perfect for your summer playlist with it’s insight into the intricacy of relationships and upbeat feeling.

Ellur explained: “‘Anywhere’ is a song written for your ex (the one that you’re not over). Set on a summer night, at dusk, after a day of drinking in a park somewhere with your friends. Your skin is warm, your head is dizzy and your recent ex is walking towards you. A song about a feeling I think everybody has felt. The building tension between you both; your past relationship and all the feelings still bubbling away in the melting pot.”

The internal conflict commences on the sight of their face, part of you still wants to be the shadow to their silhouette and the clothes they’re wearing but the other knows there’s a reason it’s over , so you remain cool shrugging off the pst, preparing for their approach head held high, unbothered smile spread on your face, but then you lock eyes and you’re sat there thinking about the nights you’d spend together talking about future days and you realise you would still go “anywhere” with them.

“A hawk with velvet claws”, “like a shot of espresso”, “like waking up before the sun comes out” have all been suggestions as to what it means to be in love. Body Type have their own suggestion to the age old question, love feels like a weekend.

Sometimes love doesn’t have to last forever to be enjoyed, those fleeting faces we kiss throughout our lives don’t always have to see us past sun rise, even a grazed hand can make us feel more alive. Sparks fly and many of us fluster trying to keep the flame ignited, so focused on trying to find ways to keep it going that we’re blind to it burning out.

Everything Is Dangerous But Nothing’s Surprising album by Body Type

After their debut album  Everything Is Dangerous But Nothing’s Surprising which was released independently and nominated for a Australian Music Prize, received praise far and wide from the likes of Rolling Stone, The Guardian, NME, DIY, Frankie, Clash, Dork, The Line Of Best Fit and more, as well as airplay from  BBC Radio 1 (Jack Saunders) and BBC 6 Music (Steve Lamacq) , their next album, Expired Candy comes with high expectations.

The band prepares to exceed them by revelling in the space they’ve carved out. Expired Candy promises to be, sweet, acidic, tough and undeniable all at once. Quick kissed plasters and playgrounds full of laughter, true faith in that happiness ever after. Looking back, was it all that or was it black? A hole in your memory that only floods occasionally, on the commute to work, a smashed dinner plate, a loud voice in your head, sent outside in the rain again.A few too many drinks into Friday night your mind shows you what it was really like, a head haunted by the ghosts of who you could have been if you had just had the parents your friends had.

A family fantasy is a tongue and cheek track discussing how experiences in childhood hinder our growth as adults. Unfazed and unbothered, sipping tea through harsh realties, turning away from adversity, you can not feel comforted by a cold hand. Who we were brought up to be prevents us from becoming who we are meant to be. Stiff upper lips mirror a face full of tears, suck it up and stand straight, stoic. Polluting their child’s air with poison from their own tongue, aren’t we supposed to protect our young?

The track itself embraces resentment and anger at what could have been in a humorous fast paced way to create an irreverent beat full of energy and anguish, staying true to the bands philosophy of discussing serious topics in a not so serious way. Elements of Queens of The Stone Age, The smashing Pumpkins and The Pixies are definitely imbued in this sound but it is ultimately the eccentric soul of Dogs! Teeth! that give this song its bite.

Set to release on this Friday, 12th of May, there will be a launch party gig on the same day, at Mama Liz’s Voodoo Lounge in Stamford, with Das Kapitans, The Dodo Appreciation Society and Muzzle, courtesy of Socks on Records.

The three piece came together through their love of 90’s alternative guitar sounds in Peterborough, 2022 , despite being brand new Dogs! Teeth! have already received airtime from the likes of WolfmanRadio, Peterborough City Radio and BBC introducing, it’s no surprise that they’ve joined Socks on Records, local DIY Indie band camp label.

Track 1: Freedom

A crescendo of booming guitar solos, electric with a fast tempo and in your face attitude. this track is anthem with its signature Marseile high energy, from the steady drum build up, to the thumping baseline and roaring guitar feedback, this track truly sets the tone for the rest if the rock and roll E.P. You can really hear the 90’s Madchester scene that have inspired this quintet.

Inspired by the band’s hometown of Derby, the streets littered with wasted potential, peeling posters of withered dreams, dark skies over desolate lives, a City once so vibrant, full of life, now everything seems to have stopped in its stride. This track promises to bring back Derby’s beating heart.

Marseille are a young rock n roll band formed in late 2021 in Derby, England. The band consists of Will Brown, Joe Labram, Lennon Hall, Tom Spray and most recently Felix Moxey.

Track 2: Only Just Begun

A heart broken as it had just began to beat. A love killed in it’s infancy, freshly bought bouquet of flowers withering before they’re received. That is what Track 2, “Only Just Begun” is all about, a break up before the love really began to blossom. This track explains why Steve Lamacq describes Marseille as having “Psychedelic sunshine beaming down on them” with the infusion of 60’s psychedelia with a mersey beat.

Optimism becomes this track with it’s upbeat guitar riffs and glorious hooks this song is great for a sing along so you can belt it out and forget the splinters of your broken heart digging into your stomach.

A testament to the sadder side of life, this emotional ballad is an exploration of a darker narrative, showcasing the band’s versatile songwriting ability. With an orchestral appeal in the form of strings this song is a heart wrenched, infused with killer hooks that expose the soul. Inspired by all that is lost, this song sends them back home.

Track 4: “Lost And Found”

Already a fan favourite this track came from the same recording sessions and had previously been an early live favourite of the band’s fans. A testament to the bend members friendship and loyalty to each other this really is an ode to the love of music, especially as it is one of the first songs the band fully fleshed out together. As a song with a lot of history, the band wanted to keep in touch with that raw, live sound. 

In 2022, Marseille had successes with the singles “Forget It All” which was played on Soccer Am and the 9 minute monster “The Jungle”. Over that summer, the band also performed at the Y-Not and Isle Of Wight Festivals. Recently seeing the end of a successful uk tour, the release of this EP and stages at up coming festival, Your City in Stoke on Trent on the 27th of May it is clear that 2023 is going to be a cracking year for this quintet.

It’s around this time we turn to the past, sharing stories of past summers round the beer garden table as the sunsets. Sentences start with ‘remember when’… and unravel into a kaleidoscope of orange imbued scenes full of laughter and friendship flood the table a you’re transported back to your favourite summer. a holiday you will never forget, one you try to replicate but always failing, each experience so unique to that day.

Stone Mile’s new single Sunset Kisses explores the semantics of rejoicing in previous events, living them vicariously as you flick through photo’s, admiring who you used to be and how you’ve grown alongside family and friends, wondering where the time’s gone and how you can reflect these faces in the upcoming summer.

Made up of Rae , lead singer and lyricist, Scott on lead guitar, Robbie on Rhythm, Gordon the drummer and Ryan on bass and backing vocals, the five formed in 2021 after meeting online. Since then they have released three songs, Settle Down, Circular Quay and now Sunset Kisses. With fans nationwide and over 2000 streams on Spotify it is clear as to why Stone Mile is becoming a household name in the Manchester Music scene.

It’s evocative of Sandy’ and Danny’s summer, one where everything changes, everything is perfect in a chaotic concoction of too many drinks, strangers gazes and blazing nights. Hands find each other in the sand and then discover more, lips meet lips, love rises as the sun falls.

Sunset kisses settles on a more joyous tone than other tracks that fall under the ice rock repertoire like riot anthem settle down that demands a decent head bang and a room full of moshers.

The sun burns the burdens away, erasing unsettling emotions that simmer within us, keeping us warm throughout the winter, we sip the sunrise and look at the sky through new lenses, life is good, life is liquid and we swim in it. Childhood is reborn when the rays of light burn through the clouds.

Recently being shortlisted to play YNOT this year looks as though it could be an exciting horizon for the quintet.

Gabi Garbutt Soars with the release of her Debut EP The Creation Of The Birds.

The influence of art in understanding our surroundings is hard to quantify. Despite the rise of social media, the immediate gratification so easily accessed from a ten second video spiel, it is still common to see satirical comic strips reflecting the structure of our current climate. We digest the world in many ways, from word on the street to billboards in times square. Everything has an influence, for example Gabi Garbutt’s new EP The Creation of the birds was influenced by Mexican surrealist painter Remedios Varo. who has a painting with the same title.

Varo has explained that she ‘repeatedly turned to music as a symbol of the wholeness [she]sought whilst believing that surrealism “contributed to art in the same way psychoanalysis has contributed to the exploration of the subconscious.” Garbutt’s latest release does just this.

Her feature track Panic encapsulates the dismal state of current affairs in a wittily wrapped opener that hits you like the cold stepping out of the shower.  This track brings with it a barnstorming collab from Du Blonde for an anthemic feel.  Whilst the second track, Stun like a flower truly explores the boundaries of surrealism, the dreamscape of a shaken mind, the art revolution of the human experience, if we do not strip back the layers of ourselves how we expect to understand our surface? Entrenched in gothic pessimism, shrouded in a foreboding atmosphere this track tis imbued in the macabre wrapped in a harrowing , power ballad style.

Swim in the unconscious sea of your mind, watch the waves roll over you as your skin stays dry, your hands become those on a clock face by the time we reach All The Magic’ which burns us deeper into the surrealistic wells of Gabi’s imagination, with arcane references to occult spells and alchemy, concluding with a spacey chromatic outro that rolls meticulously into Unquiet Mind. 

Just like the experimental elements of surrealism, everything means nothing and nothing means silence, this latest EP introduces a new direction, for Gabi. Goodbye to her distinctive jangly guitars hello to a more plaintive piano riff, a sip of sweet sax and what could either be a flute or a whistle or a soundbite of Garbutt’s mind. As the great Salvador Dali once said “Surrealism is destructive, but it destroys only what it considers to be shackles limiting our vision.” The exploration into the unknown is a frightening but liberating journey.

The EP rounds off with Satellite Gazing, a pensive ballad about searching for solace in the night sky and finding only blinking satellites, the rattling space junk of some ‘raging tycoon’, presumably Elon Musk. One day we will find a can of pop on the moon, half empty and warmed by the sun. Bored of poisoning our own planet we must pullet space next, none of these missions will extend our time on Earth or on any planet in the solar system for that matter.

Fly from the monotonous horrors of your 9-5 with The Creation Of Birds’ which embraces us on a spellbound odyssey through the hinterlands of alchemy, dark magic, melancholy and finally to the stars. Remedios Varo would probably hum along to it as she paints.

In this world we are all strangers in each others stories. Merely faces on streets to people we will never see again, their lives an uninteresting enigma, their existence barley rendered in our minds. We are all no one to nobody, as eye-catching as cracks in the pavement, a discarded cigarette on the street floor. perhaps that a little harsh, perhaps these nameless faces have an inspiring story underneath their blank expressions. After all, aren’t we all nameless?

The Redroom’s latest addition to their Neo-Soul ensemble explores some of the stories we may never hear from the perspective of a nameless woman.’ The Woman From Nowhere’ weaves an intriguing tale of mystery and woe that moves you like the swish of a skirt in the breeze, captures your ears and gets you wondering about all of the people you see but never really meet.

It is through music that we meet each other, we meet more of ourselves, who we could be and we get inspired, with songs we invite people into our world. Through music we explore ourselves, encourage change and weather internal conflict. Strangers are our friends, our lovers, ourselves, we are all those that we see and that is why the streets are an inspiring architect to pop culture, it is the people that make the art. Keen people watcher, lyricist and lead singer Jess Lewis-Ward became inspired to write The Woman From Nowhere explaining how it “is a story based on a short real-life encounter. It’s a complex take on a simple interaction. A passing conversation with an interesting woman at a music festival, led to a burst of inspiration that I had to see through. The song itself encapsulates the way in which my mind works, where I’ll often create whole worlds and stories for strangers that I meet or observe along the way. I think TWFN accurately captures the variety of musical influences (from Louise Verneuil to America) that guide our
songwriting”.

Formed in late 2019, the band consists of the 20-year-old Jessica Lewis-Ward on rhythm guitar and lead vocals, Jake Elliot on lead guitar, Dominic Aldridge playing bass guitar, Matthew Dodds on keys and Charlie McDonald behind the kit.

Last year the band moved from their homebase Newcastle to Manchester,Jess describes how the move has influenced their music career “Life in Manchester is great! We’ve met some amazing people and gained some great opportunities from the move. The music scene here is a lot bigger and more diverse in comparison to Newcastle. It definitely feels like a natural progression for us. We all absolutely love the city and can’t wait to see what’s in store for us over the next year.”

We are all people from nowhere searching for our somewhere and it looks as though The Redroom has found that somewhere; from sharing the stage with industry icons, to sell-out headline shows in both their hometown of Newcastle and their new home of Manchester, it is clear that 2023 is shaping up to be a stellar year for the quintet.

The quickest way to regain your youth is to have a crush on someone. The rush of blood to your cheeks you catch a glimpse of your cute co-worker’s eye as they peer through the glass of that Monday morning meeting room, lose the ability to structure the sentence to your usual coffee order as your favourite barista. The thrill of the chase, the hope of planting a smile on their face, having a crush is like sitting in a large walled flower garden that’s slowly beginning to burn, it is enjoying the scenery with the threat of impending doom, or growth and fruition, a crush is there perseverance of possibility.

Wishful Thinker

True to their name, cruush’s debut EP Wishful Thinker explores the themes of having a crush from the thrill, the jealousy, the desperation, and heartbreak. Vocalist and front person Amber Warren explains our music has the sweet elements of having a crush on someone but the screeching of an industrial car crusher”.

Formed from the feral depths of freshers week when Warren met, current guitarist, Arthur Boyd met at some ‘shitty event’ and formed a connection. Fully fleshed out when they were joined by drummer Fotis Kalantizis and bassist Ru Cowl, cruush was set on reimagining the shoe gaze genre for the modern age, by introducing a blend of verbs in crisis to reflect current day sensibilities, resulting in shoegaze by digital natives, a generation whom pluralism is commonplace, defining themselves as half memory and have anticipation. If you are a fan of My Bloody Valentine, Wolf Alice and The Cranberries you will call ‘Wishful Thinker’ your home.

The same titled lead track Wishful Thinker has a whimsical charm, that evokes ethereal, the magical moments you share with your crush as you hope you’re becoming closer, you feel like you’ve mastered a skill with no effort. In reality you’re crawling through sand, burns on your body believing your crawling closer to a cascading waterfall, when really, you’re plummeting to your downfall. The stemming watercolour flow state of guitar is met by mournful utterances on toxicity, physiological decline, Narcissistic behaviours, and pessimistic tendencies. The truth is having a crush is soul crushing, you sip your mind with what ifs, you waste time triple checking your teeth in the mirror and analysing their snap score to see if they’re ignoring you. Logical and intellect are the victim of this haze, this little crush is no longer a phase. Warren’s melodic splendour is antidote-like, a siren stealing attention from the tidal waves of noise with queasy timbres of disillusion, doubt, and confusion.  Wishful thinker is no doubt an appropriate figurehead of this musical ship, preparing you for both smooth sailing and Tsunamis, on the ocean of love.

Made up of singer Sam, Ryan on guitar and backing vocals, James on bass and Lisa on drums Diamond Country Dance Club was born in early 2021, a product of Covid driven dreams. Once a hobby, their talents soon saw them on stage playing to live audiences, strangers applauding them for their songs.

To be authentic is to be vulnerable and to be vulnerable is to be brave. And that is exactly what Baser achieves with her witty lyrics, charming charisma, and vivacious pop pieces. Arguably most known for her single X and Y, Baser navigates heartache, unrequited love and falling for the wrong sort of people with a whip smart brutality that cuts to the core, all whilst to the tune of punchy Britpop melodies.

Her song Friendly Sex is pretty much self-explanatory. Being friend with benefits can be quite fun until you don’t want to be friends anymore, you want, well, more but it’s unrequited and you’re made to feel like a side chick even though you’re not in a relationship. My favourite thing about this punchy track is that it has an angrier version simply titled Friendly Sex (Angrier) which, although I have never had the pleasure of meeting her, I would assume encapsulates Baser’s outgoing, bubbly but fiery personality. Her inspiring abilty to stand strong, to laugh, to cry and to hold accotunable is why she is one of this year’s breathrough talents.

It is clear why Baser has so quickly become a fan favourite. This verse encapsulates the ebullient awkwardness between you and your crush, wanting to make the first move but fearing rejection, Baser becomes the soundtrack for all our moods, cooler than an agony aunt, she’s more like an older sister who paints your nails whilst you bat tears from your eye, or a best friend that helps youn feel good and get revenge, or even the girl in the toliet on a drunken night out reminding you who you are.

The world’s discovery of Baser came when she was feeling most lost and isolated. Working at her local co-op to save money for studio sessions she felt the beginning of existential dread wash over her. Feelings of worry and wonder lead her to write Average Student a song about lacking direction and destinations in life. This received a million views on TikTok overnight Baser’s life path became mapped out for her. Demonstrating both Baser’s talent and TikTok’s role and an event engine.

The UK’s entry to the 2023 Eurovision has been announced as Mae Muller. She’s the first female to represent the UK in 5 years, the last being Lucie Jones.

By now a renowned name in the music industry Muller has been making moves since her debut release Close in 2018. Not only has she received nominations for the MTV, VMA and EMA awards, she’s also worked with the likes of Marshmello , J Balvin and Little Mix earning her the title of pop sensation. The singer is arguably best known for her platinum selling single “Better Days” which reached top ten in the US charts.

With her hit tracks like; I don’t want your money,Therapist and I just came to dance her song for Eurovision adds to the pattern of success. Her song written specifically for the contest, I wrote a song, is already a fan favourite and will be sure to stun the audience this may. Muller hopes she can follow the success of last years winner, Sam Ryder.

I wrote a song is a classic revenge song, with an empowering beat and rage filled rhythm many of the audience will be able to relate to the anger that swiftly follows a heartbreak. It is an ode to friendship coming together to fortify the hearts shield against betrayal, bullshit and belittlement. This semantic of union is sure to permeate this years theme for the contest, celebrating each other and hoisting one another up to the same level.

Being the UK’s Eurovision representative sure beats her previous claims to fame, that she once made Labrinth a cup of tea whilst working as a runner for her Aunt who works as a music video director. Although she was also the girl in the green dress in MILA’s Grace Kelly music video which is also pretty cool.

Are you happy? A question you may have been asked by a concerned friend or parent or by that odd drunken character who’s seen you down 10 tequila shots in a sitting. They want you to be happy, you want to be happy but sometimes to stretch yourself into a smile seems too much.

Ok by Black Honey is a musical remedy to this pressure. Wanting someone to be happy of course, for the most part, comes from a place of genuine love and concern or a person’s well-being but when it is not wrapped in the context of the person’s situation it becomes dismissive. A depressive episode can fluctuate, happening for years or just days at a time, it is a reoccurring spiral that often has no trigger or tunnel light. Of course, happiness is the optimal feeling, even when it is fleeting, but when it feels like a mountain climb then smoky being okay is enough.

The devotion to friendship comes through with a battle cry as the thudding drums drive the distorted guitar riffs. This raw, empowered intro is met with Phillip/s cascading vocals that pour over the pulsating bass before booming in the chorus. OK is a shield against the happiness myth, the belief that if you are not happy you are not normal, reminding us that sometimes when life gets too much or the rain is just too heavy that to be unsettled, to b dissatisfied is okay.

Released as part of their upcoming album A Fistful Of Peaches, set to come out on the 17th of March, it is clear that this new honey era will expose a more personal side. A kaleidoscope of emotional corridors, ranging from the monstrous to the manic, the hopeful to the panic, the love and the loss, a trip round the colourful house of life. This new album promises to continue the roadmap that has seen them find homes from Brighton to national stages. There is an obvious introspective take in this new sound with limited external influence this is a journey into the psyche, the unseen bits.

Ok is self-reflective, lead singer Izzy Baxter Phillips critiquing herself for “trying to be a Romeo-style hero when I’m so utterly ill-equipped to help anyone. “Whilst moth of us don’t have a degree in phycology or a qualification for therapy, having basic empathy is a human trait, wanting another to be okay and trying to get them there is heroic in its own way. Of course, most ailments cannot simply be solved with a cup of tea, a conversation and possibly a hug it is a starting point. Remember not to project or over-protect, listen to them.

If a friend is in therapy, buttress their progress, be patient with them you wouldn’t ask someone with a broken leg to go on a run so follow a similar principle when it comes to mental health. On describing the story behind the song Phillips explained “it’s a love story I wrote for my friend who was getting high all the time to dull anxiety. I didn’t want them to be struggling anymore and this song is like ‘I will stand by you and if you need a weird 10 mins where you smoke weed after drinking 8 pints till you whitey. If that’s what you need to do then it’s okay’.

The music video for OK is also out. Directed by the incredible James Noise this video exudes art-deco and looks like a dream. The transiting neon and pastel blend represent the focus on chaos when we should be enjoying the colour.

Happiness is a heavy weight that sometimes we must rest upon, this song is not only a love story to friendship it is an ode to forgiveness. Forgive yourself, fight for yourself and most importantly love all versions of yourself. Love you when you can’t get out of bed, the version who was recognised by your boss at work, the version that singly loudly and badly in the shower and the one who cry on their weekend away. You have an unknown number of days with yourself in that time allow yourself to fall, to burn bread and then bake more, when you are being kind you are doing enough.

What’s the best shop in Wakey?

Whether you’re one of the 700k TikTok followers or a Wakefield local by now you must have heard the iconic Abdul, come closer, Abdul, go back,” and the catchy “Bingo bingo, Gala bingo”. Well now there is even a Wakey Wines song, Come Closer, with its own music video.

Frustratingly the song is quite catchy, one that we’ll no doubt see trend on TikTok for a while.With is simplistic but effective wordplay the song cleverly markets Wakey Wines as the place to be, it is where things happen. Local communities, small towns and villages seemingly have the stigma that not much goes on but Wakey Wines raises a glass against this stereotype, a beacon to everyday people trying to make it.

Prime energy, WFD branded sweets, to it’s own merchandise Wakey Wines has transformed from being a tedious Tuesday lunch time trip to a Friday night hangout spot. You’re not going there for a bag of crips and a pint of milk, you’re going there to experience a slice of fame and full throttle vibrancy. Perhaps this theatrical display, evocative of a victorian market seller, will trend again changing retail once more.

The track has the potential to become this summer’s club banger, a grenade on the dance floor. This truly defines doing it differently, name another shop that has it’s own song. Binley Mega Chippy? That short lived jingle is no competition for this wobbler, right? Or will Wakey fall victim to these TikTok trends, you may burn bright but you burn out quicker.

Although owner Mohammad Azar Nazir may have gone viral for his phrases landing him guest star appearances at various nightclubs across the UK he has been met with criticism after selling the highly coveted prime energy drinks at an extortionate rate, in some cases charging £100, although this has been deemed as a marketing stunt by some.

Partial owner and promoter of the Prime Brand KSI actually responded to Mohammad’s antics yelling that ‘he can’t keep getting away with this’. It is clear that KSI is very passionate about keeping Prime at the agreed price of £2, when supermarket Asda was found to be selling it for £2.50, he called them out on twitter, writing “No, no, no. This is out of order. This isn’t Prime doing this. This is Asda.” subsequently Asda did then drop the price back down.

Mohammed has defended his decision to charge such a rate by arguing that he is just ‘making the best of a business opportunity’.

But the prices don’t seem to be deterring people who have, for the most part, accepted that this is all part of the experience such as Darren Grieves who travelled 130 miles with his three children to spend £66 on four drinks Wakey.

Whether you feel like travelling to Wakey or you’re not even up to walking to your local it is clear that TikTok is changing the face of retail, helping local businesses and giving creators the space to demonstrate their talents.

Fakers Release Toxic City

The flames of punk wrath begin as a flicker between two burning twigs before becoming a forest fire.

Fakers encompass this inferno, their guitar riffs ablaze, drumbeats petrol to the flames. Their track Toxic city speaks of destruction, a city buried under itself due to the disrespect and damage of its people. The weight of neglect, an internal rupture, it’s life in an environmental dystopia. The soul sliced into by the systems that sets boundaries, the loss of self, a wasteland of individualism. These cynical observations, the rhythm of rebellion, remind us that not all systems serve us, sometimes to scream is to survive, never surrender and never do so silently.

The essence of punk is the anthem of the individual, championing authenticity and self-expression. The desire for change, the defiance that leads to its birth is all brandished into the punk legacy. Denial of conformity, down with he established society, you become a ruler of anarchy. A contradiction of the force you are fighting, surely any structure is one that should be defied. You cannot disapprove of systems because this in itself is a system.

The solipsism of punk, the world only exists if I am here to perceive it, may be refreshing to sip from if you are feeling anti-establishment. Protests, petitions, campaigns, a need for people to listen are all evidence of rage being redesigned for good. Wrath with no direction is madness, if you’re mad don’t throw a fit, take action, make change.

Either you’re frantically scrolling titktok for that perfect last minute gift idea or you’re in your local buying booze and chocolate for yourself before tipsly crying to Love Island.

I could recomend some love songs but I feel quite cynical, lets have a collective cry together to the tune of these break up ballads.

What doesn’t this tune have? RAYE encaspulates the washing machine of emotions you rinse though in the few weeks after a break up. The drunken denial, depressive episodes flung out in bed, nights spent out with neglected friend’s, dressing up and doing it all over again. Pouring drinks, taking shots, spilling yourself over blurred men. The weight of what RAYE has been through serves to her strength in this song as she learns to have fun with her feelings, she may be broken hearted but she’s still that bitch ;

The inability to acknowledge the loss of a lover, the need to feel numb and the escape that comes with this denile and its distractions are all rife in this song. For a heavy topic the beat of the song still sends you in to your own groove when that wine hits or the tears flow. When you’re feeling a certain way escapsim,featuring 070 Shake,becomes a dance party in your ears. You feel RAYE’s rage and channel it through dance.

Escapism has been released as part of RAYE’s new album; My 21ST Century Blues which she has described as,

Raye is a household name in the music industry relasing songs such as Confidence, Tequila and You don’t know me ,to name a few, but after parting ways with Polydor records last year her new album echoes promises of a powerful era for the singer.

Maisie Peter’s – Body Better

Another break up ballad you may want to retreat into comes from Maisie Peters.

Body Better has been described by Peters as a song about;

“Insecurity and vulnerability, about giving a lot of yourself away to someone who decides they don’t want it anymore and knowing where to go from there.”

Writing it in the aftermath of a break up, the song is indepth as we all are when we reflect on every minor detail of a premature departure. The tone of a text message, regretting getting annoyed the bin hadn’t been emptied, being proud you had defended your decisions all become our focus, forgetting who we are. This disorientation in the face of reflection resonates throughout this song. Were we enough? Were we too much? was it you, was it them? What happened? This internal interogation has one destination; Tears. You can text them, you can call, you can relive it all in your head but what sort of freedom is that?

Peter’s remains self assured in this song, her soul bearing lyrics serving as a reminder that we did our best, we were enough, they just didn’t appreciate that. Sometmes it is not what has been done, or even what has been said, sometimes you’re just sleeping in the wrong bed.

Whilst this song may not warrent a dance party you can still have a bedroom rave to it, or a power walk round your neigbourhood, strutting past all those entwined together.The track itself is very joyous, with an encouraging drumbeat. The bouncy nature of the tune detracts from the weight of the lyrics which are littered with negative comparisons, critising yourself, fearing that your love is not enough when it is your only weapon agaisnt someone you believe has been chosen for their ‘better body’.

Shakira and the jam- Her disstrack on Pique

Finally, we’ve all been inspecting our jam jars recently, analysing its levels with a side eye to our signifcant other. If you have no clue what I am talking about, how have you not seen the TikTok dances to Shakira’s, now iconic,disstrack. Aimed at her cheating ex boyfriend Gerard Pique, Shakira holds nothing back remaining confident and cut throat throughout.

It is full blown Shakira, empowered, independent and fierce sick of disapointments and betrayed by the missing jam she leaves the situation.

Her now ex boyfriend Pique was a professioanl centre back, a champion in his league but Shakira was way out of his and he gave her “the worst version of himself”. Claiming herslef back as the ‘She wolf’ she is Shakira seems unphased by his lack of remorse, she is over his actions and empowered by her new found singlehood. The beat before the chorus has very quickly become inconic with its wide use on tiktok dance trends- no this time I haven’t made one but there is still time-

Alongside Miley Cyrus’s Flowers (which I did create a TikTok about) Shakira’s disstrack has been dubbed one of the most iconic songs in break up history.

Shakira met Pique way back in 2010 when he starred in her music video for Waka Waka, the offical song for the world cup that year. They went public with their relationship in 2011, sharing a kiss on stage at Shakira’s show in Barcelona. The broke up back in 2022 , after 11 years together. Initally Shakira wanted to stay silent about the reasons for the split but it wasn’t long before Picque was seen with another woman. The betrayal became clear.

Shakira has described the disstrack as “cathartic” dedicating it to the “millions of owmen who rise up against those who make us feel insigniciant, women who stand up for what they feel, think and raise their hand when they disagree. They are my inspiration”
